Beerlando (1341), Orlando, Florida, USA Jun 9, 2008 Pours a dark, cloudy, caramel-orange color with a massive, foaming, off-white head. The foam settles slowly to a small blanket, leaving solid rings and spots of sticky lacing all over the glass. The aroma is a bit of a surprise for a beer that is classified as a Dubbel. I’d call it more of a Belgian Ale, as the primary scents I pick up include yeasty bread, dry, bretty funk, herbaceous green leaves, and doughy, lightly caramelized malts. Flavors show lightly sweet caramel, toast, lightly sour, slightly peppery yeast, and mild herbs. There’s quite a bit of funkiness going on here, almost as if it is a distant cousin of a Jolly Pumpkin brew. Medium bodied and moderately carbonated, it goes down smooth and finishes semi-dry. If there’s any knock at all on the beer, its that it has a slight medicinal character that I’d imagine comes from the herbs. That aside, this is a really nice, refreshing, summertime beer that I’d really like to get more of. Underrated, for sure. A Dubbel, however, this is not, at least in my opinion.
heemer77 (3771), Savannah, Missouri, USA Sep 17, 2008 Deep garnet body with a light brown sugar colored head. The aroma is sweet with prunes and some hints of herbs. There is also a definite milk chocolate note. The taste is raspberries with some iced mocha. There is also some light cola in the finish. A pleasing brew, this is interesting. Very low carbonation. fonefan (4850), Ulfborg, Denmark Sep 8, 2008 Bottle 33cl @ home. Clear medium orange amber color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is light to moderate malty, caramel, moderate hoppy, moderate to light heavy yeasty, chlorine notes. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a long to average duration. Flavor is sweet, sugary, caramel and some fuits and spices. FatPhil (2352), Espoo, Finland Aug 26, 2008 330ml bottle (Cracked Kettle, Amsterdam)
Muddy red, even though poured with minimal yeast, small fizzy head. Quite fizzy in the mouth. Sour husky graininess, in aroma. Pleasant roastiness, some sour fruitiness, dry spicy yeastiness. A little muddy, tastewise as well as looks, but very pleasant hops. Not particularly deep or complex. radiomgb (1776), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada Jul 22, 2008 Amber-brown in colour with a long lasting creamy off-white coloured head, good lacing. The aroma was lightly sour with some sweet caramel, fruits - apples and peaches. The flavour is sweet although sharp and acidic, some peaches, floral with some caramel. Lightly sour mouthfeel, medium body, high carbonation. Finishes again with some sourness, filling due to the high carbonation.
This is starting to fade although I have no idea how old this bottle was, the acitidy was starting to become a factor.
330ml bottle obtained in a trade with Beerlando, thanks Bryan.
