Aroma of raisins, dates, CO2, and mustiness. Flavor of alcohol, dark fruit, light Dr. Pepper, candi sugar, and burnt grain. I would probably appreciate more with a little age on this one. bierkoning (6099), La Tropica, Netherlands
| 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 8/20 | Jun 6, 2009 Bottle. Murky brown color. Pours a huge head. Yeast and figs in the aroma. Yeasty flavor with dried fruit, figs and caramel. Sweet, almost sugary sweet but the yeastyness too strong throughout the tasting of this beer, which makes it almost unpleasant to drink. Disappointing. patrick767 (2051), fort wayne, Indiana, USA

It smells mainly of hops with some caramel malt and alcohol coming through as well. There’s a big hop taste with flowery citrus notes and a big enough malt body to keep it in pretty good balance. It’s full bodied and has good, crisp, bitter hops finish. Very well done. daniele (1750), Italy

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 4, 2009 Bottle at Vilvordia fest. Dark brown beer. Nose is something like dark candi sugar home cooked in a cast iron skillet. Mouthfeel dominates the drinking experience, first very lively then going very dry. Beneath is a dark malt flavor, caramelized sugar backdrop, and a pretty serious bitterness for balance. A bit rough I think, like getting smacked over the head with that skillet, but tasty and enjoyable. Case (37), Germany
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Apr 21, 2009 Pours dark-brown color with enormous brownish head. Aroma is sweet-yeasty with plums, candi sugar and some weird undefinable rather artificial note.
Taste is bold and spicy, dark fruits with a pronounced sour background reminding me of Oerbier. Alcohol is noticable but not overbearing. With all this going on and the spicy peppery mouthfeel I only ever noticed the hops in the aftertaste. Unlike the sweet aroma the taste is actually quite dry which I enjoy a lot. This is a big imposing brew that constitutes an interesting unique mix but maybe slightly overreaches by trying to be everything at the same time: big and very hoppy and sour. That said it is well-balanced and very drinkable. I think this brew must have been at least partially inspired by Oerbier and certainly owes a lot to the classic. Next time I’ll try to have it together with an Oerbier in order to be able to make further comparisons. A great brew! thewolf (5828), Kolding, Denmark

Pours deep redish brown qith a giant, light-beige, frothy head. Aroma is quite hoppy, some grassiness and fruitiness, lightly roasted, some plums. Generally quite powerful. Highish carbonation, good creamy and lightly dry mouthfeel. Flavour is a bit ashy, lots of interesting hops notes, good candi sugar. Long, lingering, bitter aftertaste. Very different for a Belgian beer and miles better than Smisjes Dubbel IPA.
