Weird leather aroma, grainy, leafy, very yeasty. Lightly citric and rather harsh. Not so tasty in mouth, mostly tart with weird flavours seemingly off, approaching onions, frensh fries.. plastic… Very weird, mustardy bitterness, short aftertaste, fortunately. Rather high carbonation, lifeless mouthfeel. jtw (944), farmington, Michigan, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Oct 17, 2004 pale cloudy amber. smells like a belgian, mustard is barely detectable. doesn’t really seem like mustard belongs in a beer, but what the hell, it’s worth a shot. has typical belgian characteristics, yeast, grapes, alcohol, and there is only a hint of spicy mustard in the finish. sour/tart finish. too thin to be a good belgian, and not enough mustard to be a spice/herb/vegetable beer. try it, but just once. hopdog (5614), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Oct 14, 2004 Poured a medium to dark cloudy amber with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of yeast and mustard). I can taste the mustard as well. Grapes in the taste as well. Thinner, watery body. My first ’Mustad Ale’ - are there that many out there and do I want to try more? lachesis (759), St Idesbald, Belgium
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Oct 12, 2004 Pours a hazy dirty yellow beer with a light brown shine. It has a spicy aroma with hints of malts, sugar some vegetal hops and touch of Colman’s mustard powder. the taste is on the sweet side with some spicyness and a little bitterness of the hops. the afthertaste is kind a thin with an uniteresting finish. aracauna (2391), Georgia, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Oct 7, 2004 Cloudy yellow-tan with a sizable, big-bubbled head. The aroma is fairly weak, a bit of bandaids and an odd aroma that must be the mustard seed, but doesn’t really smell like mustard. The flavor is very dry and short with a bit of bitterness up front, more of that odd bit and not a whole lot else. Really a bit of a let down. I think I would have been happier if it had a lot of flavor and I just didn’t like it. This was just kind of bland and bubbly. Pigfoot (2226), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA

Saw this in the cooler of a store I’d visited for the first time, intriqued by a beer I’d never seen, never heard of, from Belgium, and it’s a...what’s that? Mustard ale?...MUSTARD...ale? Oh, good golly, I never dreamed of such a thing! What’s next, pickle pilsener?
So...appearance: a hazy, opaque, yet bright orange hue, with a slim, short, fizzy head.
Aroma, deep and delirious, ancient, yet vital, bursting with citrus and spice and utterly unfelt before. Nice stuff, reminding me of the work of this land’s monasteries, full of that mystery and legend...
Very spicy on the palate at first, then mellow, the mustardy flavor is felt, then slips away, yet returns with further sips, and the mustardy taste lingers just a bit. Flavor continues, shows slightly citric, just a little sour, but overall pretty pleasant...don’t know if I’ll likely thirst for more of this stuff, but it was an interesting experience, one I regretted not for one second.
Mustard. Ale.
Gee Whiz, is there nothing those nutty Belgians can’t do?

| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Sep 23, 2004 Mustard seed, eh? I must admit I avoided this for some time for just this reason but really the mustard flavor is exceedingly mild and I think my perception of it might be imagined. It pours a hazy yellow with a big, diminishing head. The nose is more sourdough than it is mustard--if anything, I smell coriander or black pepper or something. Lightly tart, light bodied with a soft, watery mouthfeel. A bit low on carbonation. I detect a hint of chlorine in there--maybe that’s the mustard, I don’t know. Somewhat bland but it’s a decent beer. Inveigler (371), Ferndale, Michigan, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Sep 14, 2004 Sweet. Belgiany aroma with lots of candy and yeast tones. Hazy, mustardy, yellow in color. Some maltiness, styrian hops, and al little bit of the mustard is perceptiple. This brew lingers in the mouth with a tart dryness ... even some chalkiness. Not a great beer, but drinkable.
