Oakes (6853), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Mar 10, 2005 Cheers to the Boise crew for the growler! Sadly, I didn’t find this very good. Beautiful red-brown colour I liked. The aroma and flavour matched heavy malt with equally burly vanilla. I never dig strong vanilla notes. Hints of diacetyl do nothing to help what I find to be a nasty clash of strong malt notes and bludgeoning cask overtones. BeerPrince (1701), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Mar 8, 2005 Amber body with a small white head. Slight lacing. Aroma starts hoppy and ends with some caramel, citrus and oak. Flavour is hoppy and bitter with some alcohol tone from the whiskey barrels. NIce body, smooth wiith a slight sweetness. DA (2389), Portland, Oregon City, Oregon, USA Mar 7, 2005 Pours copper with a thin white head. Sweet bourbon flavor gives the caramel malts a butterscotch note. Hops are present throughout but do a good job of just supporting the sweetness, not interfering with the nice bourbon tones. Very smooth brew with a bit of residual sweetness to carry on the woody tones. Sham (1846), Seattle, Washington, USA Mar 1, 2005 Cloudy ruby with amber hues and a creamy head of off white. Good lacing. Hoppy nose that is mostly bitter though some pine and citrus eek through. You can pick up hints of the Beam and there are some oakey qualities, too. The flavors are mostly bitter with more of the beam standing strong next to caramel. More tones of wood come through with a touch of alcohol. Thick bodied, slightly chewy. Finishes off bitter and malty. BückDich (4540), Boise, Idaho, USA Feb 27, 2005 Orange amber color, almost a dark mahogany. Tan head, light lacing. Nose of vanilla & cherries, oak & port, nice bourbon sweetness blends with the hops to bring out a classic boilermaker ale without all of the bite and all of the smoothness. Nutty & cherry, fruity & creamy. mmm mmm! Finishes smooth & malty. Good barrel aged beer.
