Nice roasty nose, lotsa malt and light choco-coffee hints. Flavor is pretty good as well, even more roastiness, borderline burnt maltiness. Medium bodied..smooth mouthfeel. Finishes dry and lightly bitter. Good stuff. fatty (363), Perkiomenville, Pennsylvania, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 2, 2005 Draft at brewpub. Poured a black color with medium light brown head that diminished slowly and produced good lacing. Good roasted malty aroma. Medium to full body with creamy texture. Full roasted malt flavor with a dry finish of good duration. Good dry stout. redlight (1496), Winter Park, Florida, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 1, 2005 Nitro... Pitch black ale with a large, creamy, beige head. Neverending retention. The aroma and flavor are a perfect match... with a touch of soy sauce in the aroma only. Otherwise, smoke, coffee, molasses, bitter and burnt notes of charcoal saturate both. Medium-bodied and creamy with mild carbonation. Finishes bitter and dry. crizay (1050), Brook Park (was Tampa,FL), Ohio, USA

The thing about small brewpubs is the consistency fluctuates. I always thought the Iron Rat was average at best. Well I’ve had several of the latest batch the last few weeks and it is a LOT better than past samples. This batch is better balanced with a great chocolate malt and roastiness that pervades the whole taste range. The porter used to be my favorite here and I only started drinking the stout again because they said the Imperial wouldn’t go on until the stout ran out...so I wanted to do my part. Glad I did. This is an excellent batch.

Decent moutfeel and texture. Decent appearance and ok taste, but it just isn’t half the beer the TBBC Jack the Quaffer Porter is. Very one-dimensional stout whereas the porter moves you through a nice range of flavors. hopdog (5617), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA
