Commercial Description:
Originally brewed by the monks of St. Francis of Paula (Paulaner Brewery today) as “liquid bread” for the fast during Lent, and dedicated to the Savior, or “Salvator” in German. It is very smooth, dark, rich, and malty. (Dopplebock comes in around 7.2%-8% abv.)

On tap at Taps. Color was dark, reddish brown. Aroma of dark fruit, banana, sweet malt and must. Flavor was a bit strange. Only a slight sweetness. Flavor of earthy, caramel, and fruit. Some sweet malt and toffee.

Tasted at brewery. Mohogany color; nice, lasting head. Aroma and taste of rich, sweet, full body with roasted malts, molassas, caramel, toffee, spices. I was told 7.6%. Decent but more sweet than complex like a Salvator.

I was looking forward to this one and I have to say I’m a little disappointed.Dark brown pour. Flavor is a sweet and malty with some kind of spicy (clove/nutmeg) notes. The abv is well hidden and there is a slight hop bite near the finish.
