| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 5, 2005 Top notch version. Pitch black pour lets no light through. Thick, lasting cocoa colored head sits on top like a thick dollop of whipped cream. Huge roasted nose. Thick, creamy full bodied brew thats almost oily in nature. Flavor hints at cocoa and coffee. Sweet but nowhere near cloying. Just the right amount of bitterness hits in the finish with just a touch of alcohol. Very, very good. Schultsc (486), Henderson, Nevada, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 12, 2006 Dark brown-black color with a fine mocha head. Lots of dark roasted malt notes in the aroma including caramel, toffee, and coffee. Good richness with a nice malty sweetness contrasting the pleasant roasted malt and hops bitterness. Great balance overall between alcohol, sweetness, bitterness, and richness. Quite well done. beerbill (1978), Laurel, New York, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Nov 5, 2007 From a growler received in a trade with dirty_martini. Thanks Larry! Pours an opaque black with a thin tan head that completely disappeared after a few sips. I’m wondering if a bit of carbonation was lost during its cross-country journey. Very pleasant aroma of milk chocolate with supporting flavors of coffee and lightly roasted malt. The flavor was again milk chocolate along with some notes of coffee and lightly roasted malt. These three flavors were well proportioned. Light hops bitterness at the finish that lingered for some time after the swallow. Nice full body and very smooth despite its 8% ABV. Very enjoyable. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 9, 2006 From draft. Pours a deep black, opaque obsidian with a tall serving of thick cream head. Aromas of mild chocolate, rich coffee, and an underlaying layer of anise for complexity. Full bodied, creamy mouthfeel with an intense malt character. Each flavor part is equally balanced and delivers a unique sensory experience to the tongue. A fine coffee provides a roasty bitterness, a touch of molasses balances with a deep pruny sweetness, some dark chocolate backs it up with even more richness, and some lingering tones of anise provide a touch of hoppy spice. A touch of alcohol lingers on the palate, but its more than welcomed. A very nice, well balanced treat thats not overdone. YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA

Poured a deep, dark brown, almost black. Foamy tan head. The initial aroma was coffee. Notes of dried fruit, milk chocolate, toffee. Medium to full bodied. Flavor was bitter roasted coffee in the good sense with hints of chocolate and alcohol that belied its 8% ABV. Nice stuff. bu11zeye (5672), Frisco, Texas, USA
