Pours a rich and deep rusty red color with a standard-sized light tan head, the color of wheat bread dough. Inviting fruity hop nose, with notes of marachino cherries, blood oranges, sticky toasty malts and some fresh but light cedar. Texture is full and sticky, moderately frothy as well, with a crisp bite of snappy orange and cherry flavored hops, and a huge, heavy note of chewy, toasry Munich malts. Well made. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Oct 5, 2007 Deep red color with a small, off white head. Slight hop aroma with a bit of malts. Thick mouthfeel. Good flavor, not very strong, slightly hoppy finish with a nice malty balance. Very drinkable with no alcohol in the flavor. A nice ale. ElGaucho56 (393), USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 30, 2007 Pours a garnet red, not really a DIPA as some places claim, very leafy hoppy nose, piney, grassy. very green. Crisp on the tongue, not too much going on, some brown sugar, alcohol is up front in the nose and palate, kinda chewy but a little thin, dissipating finish. Not bad. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 30, 2007 Bottle. Thin frothy head. Extremely dark for a red. Aroma is rich with notes of mocha. Taste is like an orgasm in my mouth. No dont write that. Taste is dark, rich with almost perfect balance. Very smooth, bitter finish. Almost as good as Hop-Devil. wetherel (1641), Encinitas, California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 29, 2007 One of many beers from Steve (shp555) we tasted in line for the 07 Alesmith BA release. Thanks Steve! Darkish amber color. Small bubble head. It was essentially a barleywine, so I was surprized to have a mild hop bitterness with a name like Big Hoppy Monster. Still very nice. Sweet. Easy to drink. aubreya (676), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Sep 27, 2007 The color was deep amber/brown, very dark for an imperial ipa. The head was creamy, light biege, and medium bodied. The aroma was very hoppy. There was pine, some citris, and alcohol. The flavor was citrisy and alcohol at first with a piney, warm, bitter finish. The hops were very strong. The palate was smooth. emacgee (1892), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Sep 27, 2007 Pours a dark burnished red, dark ruby red. I wish it had more carbonation, I coaxed a medium creamy light tan head. The aroma is strong resiny hops, leans more on the piney side. Has definite citrus notes to it, but its very very piney in its hops. Some caramel and malt in the background. Very balanced and nice aroma. Very rich flavor, the hops are a little toned down, the flavor is not as substantial as I would have liked. Lacks the carbonation I would have liked as well. Ok, alcohol for sure, mainly piney hops (Simcoe probably) some caramel in the malt, not super complex or upfront. A bit waxy just not as full as I would have liked. Still great though. performula (147), Triangle Area, North Carolina, USA
