This is listed as a imperial IPA but it might need to be an american strong ale. Aroma of citrus, brown sugar, and some breadiness. matly and sweet. A mild sweet flavor that was pretty well balanced. Pretty solid beer but still shocked by it. bager (2121), Copenhagen N, Denmark

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Nov 2, 2006 Updated: Nov 6, 2006Pours a deep, dark copper/amber with a thick, lasting tan head. Aroma is almost chewy with malts and caramel and lots of fruity hops. Beer has a very velvety smooth texture, starts off bitter-sweet heavy with grapefruity hop flavor and bitterness. The middle of the flavor shows lots of bitterness that sticks to the tongue along with a markedly sweet caramel and spice malt profile. The finish is full-bodied, very fruity (citrus, some purple candy flavor [i.e. artificial grape]), very hoppy, and intoxicating with the warmth of alcohol. I’m sampling a bottle now - it was even better the other night when I tasted it on draft. shigadeyo (2263), Harrison, Ohio, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 2, 2006 Well, I just finished packing up a big box of stuff to send out to kenb, so I figured it was time for a beer... This bottle of Terrapin Big Hoppy Monster comes to me via trade from goldtwins - Thanks Larry!...
This beer pours a dark ruby brown. It has lively carbonation and a nice tan head. Holy smokes that looks thick as it comes out! Aroma is citrus (orange and pineapple) with some other sweet dark fruit and malt in the nose. My, my it smells good! Flavor is well caramelized malt up front with some light fruitiness (Peach maybe? Apricot? I can’t really tell) toward the back. The finish has a medium bitterness bites a bites a bit at first, but slowly mellows away as the flavor lingers. The after taste has a bittersweet/dark chocolate quality to it. This brew is quite malty, but its smooth light citrus hop bitterness makes this an extremely well balanced beer. This beer has a medium to full body with a nice creamy mouthfeel. Malt comes out even more as it warms and it actually gets better and better!
This was my 4th Terrapin brew and I have yet to be disappointed! I really enjoyed this one, but of the four I’ve had, the Rye-Squared and Wake-and-Bake Coffee Oatmeal Stout are probably my two favorites...
