Similar taste, boozy hop finish. Would like to re-rate a newer bottle of this however, I think some hop characters have faded from this one. Very good nonetheless. ruskiimperial (78), Richmond, Virginia, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 29, 2009 The initial appearance is quite dark, looking more of like a barleywine than a double ipa. The aroma has some very sweet malts, reminds me a bit of brown sugar. The initial flavor is very heavy on the caramel malts, with some hoppiness thrown in almost as an afterthought. I would personally classify this more as a Barleywine or a Red Ale. There is also some molasses that I get on the aftertaste, mixed in with a bit of spicy hoppiness. Overall, it leaves you with a nice and sweet sensation that is kept in check by the hops but the classification on this site is not correct in my opinion. Appearance: poured as amber-brown red with large, mid dense foamy crown. Off tanned with sparse lace. Nose: Ahh, rich sweet brown malts , chocolate sweets with light fresh hop top. Malt presented here very nicely. Good blend. 8- Flavor/Palate : Full big bodied, bready hint of rye (wood oven baked) bread. Toasty , even earthy in character with rounded feel. Dry alcohol on edges. Very high on top you will find hop scent. It is named as Big Hoppy Monster but even bigger show is malt.

Reddish orange pour medium head, no lacing. Malty flavor with a pomegranate flair, cherries at midpalate. Parsley also. Sufficiently bitter, alcohol is well blended, and has nice balance. Very enjoyable. mholdefer (5), Northport, Alabama, USA does not count | 4.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Aug 15, 2009 Strong coffee/chocolate flavor is nicely balanced with bitter hoppiness that leads to beer happiness - the best of two flavor sets complements each other rather than competing with each other - maybe the best beer out of the Terrapin family drowland (1433), Tallahassee, Florida, USA

Pours a very dark amber, almost brown with medium off-white head. Aroma of floral with slightly citrus hops, pretty mild, wet cardboard, caramel, and strong malt. Flavor matches well, has a strong dried fruit taste in addition. Think this has the potential for more and need to try it fresh in the 09 release.
