I’ve never been in a field of hops, so maybe that makes no sense. Maybe I’ve had too many.....Great beer. doppelmeup (51), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA
| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Apr 30, 2008 I was very pleasantly surprised by this beer. I bought a four pack for a trade, and had a couple left so I decided sample one of these higly rated brews for myself.
Listed on BA as a double IPA, I was expecting a bright orange grapefruit/pine/hop bomb. I don’t think this style is correct for this beer. The label describes it as an Imperial Red Ale, and this is right on the money.
The beer pours a dark amber red into a pint glass with a rich, thick head that slowly fades and leaves great lacing all the way doen the glass.
Aromas are full of cut grass and chocolate malt. A strong rye presence and some citrus balance this out. Very multidimensional.
The taste is absolutely awesome! There are so many flavors it’s hard to list them all. Chocolate, rye, spicy hops, fruity. Very hoppy yes, but definitely not a hop bomb. This is one of the best beers I’ve had!
Mouthfeel is both hoppy and dry and slick and malty at the same time. The high ABV is completely hidden.
Overall, this is one of the best beers I’ve had. It just screams DRINK ME! Don’t pass this by if you see it on the shelves!

Not quite a Double Dog but brought out the hop monster in me. Color was superior, body was nice and full. Try this beer. muzzlehatch (4427), Burlington, Vermont, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Apr 26, 2006 12 oz bottle (2005) obtained via in-person trade with Wunderbier in Savannah, GA (April 2006). The hops are evident immediately on opening the bottle, plenty of fresh leafy greens even after 6 months along with an awesome sweet vanilla/almond blend, ripe pears and an exploding orgy of flowers....all emanates from a deep, tawny maple-brass body topped by a creamy very slow-decaying tan head and thick ropy lacing.....the body is sweetly nutty, lightly fruity (apples, pears, and midway through, tart bing cherries), a touch doughy in consistency, and growing in dry, slightly aged hoppy-woody hardness towards the end, which still maintains some sweetness and a light syrupy quality....there is virtually no trace of alcohol at first though a hint of medicinal character develops with the cherry syrupyness, but not in any way that is damaging to the extraordinary sweet-bitter quality in any way, merely adding that something that lets you know this is an adult drink and not just some superluminous combination of the greatest soda you ever had and the best organic almond milk....simultaneously beguiling, soft, burning and fiery, juicy and hard, this feels like the most entrancing and jubilant example of a strong IPA that I’ve had since first encountering Dreadnaught, and it’s damn near the equal. I can’t imagine how great this would be fresh on tap....I won’t, or the tears will flow. Thank you so goddamn much Brandon!
