Beerlando (1135), Orlando, Florida, USA May 15, 2008 Draft at the Ravenous Pig beer dinner. First keg of this beer ever tapped. Paired with a braised pork belly, caraway scented potato salad, and rye sauerkraut. Delicious! Pours a clear, brassy brown color with a foamy beige head. Minimal sudsy lacing noted. The aroma shows the signature Terrapin rye malts, with lightly toasted caramel, toffee, citrus hops, and tons of charred, oaky vanilla. Flavors follow suit, with toasted rye, caramel, toffee, and tons of citrus hops being massaged ever so delicately by smoothing vanilla and French oak. This is a match made in heaven. Whereas the whiskey chip aged version seems like it would be too overbearing, this version, aged on virgin oak, provides a perfect compliment to the clean, rye IIPA. Medium-full bodied and smooth as silk. Easy drinking, even at 9%. This is a fantastic beer.
bu11zeye (3573), Frisco, Texas, USA Jul 2, 2008 (Draught) Pours a hazy amber body with a medium off-white head. Aroma of vanilla, citrus, oak, and light smoke. Flavor of oak, rye, hops (citrus, pine), and vanilla with a bitter finish. mhelgason (404), Charlotte, North Carolina, USA Jun 30, 2008 on tap. average fizzy/creamy khaki head into clear brown body with good lacing present. aromas of light vanilla, sweet citrus hops, some oak, and caramel malts. flavor is an intense bitter that subsides some into a bitter sweet finish. long finish duration and soft carbonation. good imp IPA with well-hidden alcohol. ChainGangGuy (1444), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Jun 28, 2008 Appearance: Pours a clear, mahogany-hued body with a small, white head.
Smell: Dry, caramel-scented maltiness, and, well, it’s fairly oaky. Notes of spicy rye, booze, and citrus.
Taste: Dense pale and caramel maltiness with a perky, medium-high sweetness present. Plenty of smooth oakiness with a mild taste of vanilla. There’s a big bitterness lurking in here. Not picking up much rye. Pinch of citrus zest. Bittersweet finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium-low carbonaton.
Drinkability: Reasonably tasty, well-made, and surprisingly drinkable. It’s nice to see Terrapin playing around. GAManiac (200), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jun 18, 2008 Pours a deep clear amber with a big fluffy off-white head that lingers throughout leaving very good lacing.
Smell is mostly sweet malts with vanilla and caramel. There are hints of oak in the smell but not a lot.
The taste is much like the smell but has a bit heavier oak presence, especially as the beer warms. I get a bit more of the rye in the taste as well.
Mouthfeel is medium to heavy and very creamy with a good bit of carbonation.
I really enjoyed this beer and it got better as it warmed. The oak really only complimented the taste and I actually like this a little better than the regular rye squared. ucusty (803), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Jun 17, 2008 My first time at the new tylers! Amber/brownish pour with frothy off-white head. Sweet caramel malts and oak on the nose. Citrus, rye, oak, vanilla, and hops. Oak and rye mix well together
