This was another extra thrown in, in a recent trade with beavers, thanks again Mike! Rye Squared pours a murky orange with large carbonation bubbles that rise throughout the body. A standard pour produces a two finger slightly off white head that fell to a solid cap. As the head fell it became creamy and left solid lacing down the glass.
There is a solid rye presence in the nose of this beer that comes across spicy and the hop character adds a candied orange peel sweetness I really enjoy. The maltiness leans towards the caramel side of things but there’s also a good amount of sweet bread doughiness. The spicy rye and citric hop character take the lead and make the nose of this beer unique and inviting.
The flavor follows the aroma closely. The first thing to hit my tongue is the candied orange peel. Mid palate the spicy rye comes along and takes control before the finish brings a combination of the two. The flavor is more balanced then the nose suggested. The malts come across with a hefty drizzling of caramel, a sweetened doughiness, and a touch of alcohol on the swallow. The flavor overall is balanced and enjoyable.
The mouthfeel on this beer is excellent. There’s a medium body with an incredible silky creaminess. The carbonation is low but adds the perfect amount of tongue soothing creaminess.
The incredible mouthfeel combined with great balance make for an easy drinker. This beer is packed to the gills with hoppy goodness and rye spiciness. My bottle of Rye Squared disappeared in a hurry.
This is another good beer from Terrapin Brewing and just may be my favorite from their portfolio. This brewery has really made some big strides to get where they are and this beer exemplifies that. The rye adds a unique twist on a big beer. I can’t get enough of this stuff.

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Jan 15, 2009 Dense-looking, cloudy Halloween orange pour rallies a miniscule head. Strangely "Belgian" nose… plum, jellybeans, caramel, bubblegum… also spicy and "oily" aromas. The beer is much drier than the bouquet would indicate, and tastes of black pepper, tons of clovey phenols, minimal indeterminate/characterless hop spice... finishing with anise and maple. A fleeting citric heatflash of limon vodka. Mouthfeel is so OMG unbelievably thick and gooey, it’s downright weird. Deep, brief bitter aftertaste. Overall has many qualities of a dubbel, and barely qualifies as an IPA hopwise... it’s a decent beer in that there are no flaws, but lacking focus,it blasts away wildly in all directions and just ends up spinning its wheels. lithy (1725), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA

Dark brownish orange with a full finger of cream colored head that leaves nice lashes of lacing against the glass. Big grapefruit hop aroma, spicy rye and caramel malt. Taste is mostly malty caramel, sweet butterscotch. Only a hint of rye spice and despite the age a nice grapefruit citrus hop finish. ksurkin (391), Norfolk, Virginia, USA

The flavour has sweetness and notes of malt, syrup, caramel, rye, spruce, fruit, citrus and it ends on a slightly dry and bitter note. It’s harmonic, full bodied and really nice.
