Pours a thick rich reddish amber with a tight slick very light beige head. Aroma of citrus, alcohol, rye, grain, white grapes. Creamy mouthfeel even with the very forward bubbly carbonation and a thick syrupry body round out the palate, no noticable alcohol though. Flavor of grain, alcohol, citrus rind, caramel, molasses, corn syrup. This is one serious syrupy thick beer. Good stuff but an IIPA/DIPA no Fn way. slimchill (783), Austin, Texas, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 16, 2008 Bottle (thanks BeerZack). Sweet bready nose, minimal hop presence. Cloudy copper with a white head. Good hop character, well balanced by obvious rye notes. Very smooth drinking Tweety (344), Vancouver, Washington, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 15, 2008 12 oz. bottle - thanks durhambeer! I’d just like to start by saying that I don’t think this one really fits into the category of an imperial IPA, it’s an imperial pale ale, and probably best categorized as an ASA, since it just doesn’t have anywhere near the hops that you’d expect from an IIPA. That being said, here goes: Light copper pour, not much white head. Aroma is a sweet maltiness with just a little bit of hops. Taste’s loaded with caramel-y sweetness, lots of maltiness, but still very smooth, and avoids the sickly sweetness that I dislike in many big, malty beers. GeneralGao (3071), Iowa City, Iowa, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 14, 2008 12oz bottle. Poured a clear dark orange color. Head was off white and left some lace behind. The aroma was of sweet cream, husky grain, caramel, and molasses. Smooth mouth feel, medium bodied. Tasted of orange liqueur, cotton candy, and tangy rye. Interesting. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 13, 2008 Definitely sweeter than other RyePA’s I’ve had. This one is also more balanced than others. The aroma is just sweetness, but the hops and rye bitterness balance out in the flavor. Pours a copperish brown with fuzzy tan head. Has a pleasant, bitter aftertaste that mellows. At cellar the flavors come out a little more. CaptBier (303), Birmingham, Alabama, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 13, 2008 Bottle. Pours a deep, hazy orange with thin white head. Aroma is sweet with nice hop balance. The mouthfeel is very thick but the taste itself is kind of thin. Theres a nice malt flavor to it but the hops just dont seem to be there except a very little in a bitter, dry finish. Nice start, but has some holes in it. Gregis (1135), Shawnee, Kansas, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 12, 2008 Bottle courtesy of TheBeerCellar. Pours a hazy orange-amber with two fingers of creamy beige head that leaves a ladder of lace in its wake. The aroma is of sweet citrus, spruce and apricots with a solid caramel, biscuity malt backing. The rye adds just a touch of spiciness to the mix, but it’s certainly more of a supporting role than a starring role in this beer. Medium to full-bodied and creamy with a dry, bitter, lingering finish. The flavor is of sweet, caramel malt with lesser notes of apricot and pineapple backed by a solid hit of citric and somewhat resinous hop bitterness. The aftertaste lingers bitter and slightly spicy (rye). This is a very tasty and satisfying brew. Thanks again for this one, Matt! Ibrew2or3 (2766), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 11, 2008 Courtesy of Quake1028. Pours clear copper with nice off white head. Malty aroma that is being punctuated by pine hops and a mild rye twang. The taste has a full boldness of flavor with sweet mildly roasted malts, some mild rye malt twang and a suitable level of pine hop bitterness too. There’s some yummy sweet citrus notes and grapefruit hop bitterness that run into the finish. For a moment or two it has a sweet orange hard candy like feel. Really nice tasting brew I could drink on a regular basis.
