Commercial Description:
Double the malt, double the hops, and double the flavor of the original Rye Pale Ale recipe. (Hence the name Rye Squared.) With its mammoth hop aroma, bitterness and flavor, this beer is not for the faint at heart. The Rye Squared clocks in at a hefty 8.5% ABV so double your pleasure and double your fun because Terrapin went a little crazy with this one! The first keg of Rye Squared went on tap at Tasty World in Athens on Monday April 25th 2005. A special thank you goes out to the newly formed Terrapin Keg Killers. We were told that Tasty World would put the Rye Squared on as soon as they finished off a keg of a "Select" beer they had on tap. When the Terrapin Keg Killers heard about this they went to Tasty world and finished off that other keg in record time. By 10pm on Monday they were enjoying the fruits of their labor when the first ever Rye Squared keg went online. Malt: 2-row pale, Munich, Malted Rye, Bisuit Malt, Honey Malt. Hops: Amarillo, Cascade, East Kent Goldings, Fuggle, Magnum

I would classify this as more of an American Strong. This reminded me quite a bit of Double Bastard which is a good thing. Wonderfully hoppy yet loaded with sweet malts, this brew really hit the spot. Delicious...

Bottle from Miketd. Pours an amber color with a white head. Smells like rye with some charred caramel and a side of hops. Tastes like a chewy grainy hoppy caramel brew. Interesting.

I’ve been trying to find this for awhile, and a wine store near my house finally started carrying it. Bottle poured into a snifter, beautiful amber color, quickly dissipating head. Nose is grassy hops, grapefruit, citrus. Heavy rye in the taste, with a slight maltiness that borders on bitter caramel. Not my favorite double pale, but very decent.

Bottle. Pours a pretty amber color with a thin off-white head that fades quite fast. Almost opaque. It looks dense. Aroma is floral and fruity with a bit of a resinous character. Taste is quite bitter, grapefruity. I don’t get the pronounced maltyness that other reviewers noted. Has a nice, thick, creamy mouthfeel. Finish is quite dry and a bit astringent.

(12oz bottle, 2008 vintage, thanks TheBeerCellar) Fluffly, large beige head atop clear, deep amber body, nice lacing. Aroma is moderately sweet, orange/floral, some spicy/rye. Taste is moderately sweet, grapefruit/orange, caramel, some pine, cantaloupe, light rye. Sticky full body with some resin.

Thanks to UncleMattie for sending this one as part of my first trade. Pours a translicent, nearly opaque, orange, brown, caramel color with a thin, slightly off white head that faded fast. The aroma is balanced, citrus hops with other fruity notes prevalent (mango, pear). The hop aroma is mellowed with a distinct malt character that makes you think of caramel and chewy grains. Flavor is wonderful, the hops initially take a back seat to the sweet, sugary malts that taste like candy. The hops come in at the finish and bring milder citrus fruits (orange and tangerine). Very thick in the mouth with a lasting sweetness. You can really taste the difference in the malt character due to the amount of rye used. Unique for an IIPA and as it stands alone, delicious.

Draft @ grand opening of Terrapin. Not your typical IIPA. More malty than hoppy. Very creamy mouthfeel. Nice caramel taste. I lean more to the hops but this was good.
