Commercial Description:
Double the malt, double the hops, and double the flavor of the original Rye Pale Ale recipe. (Hence the name Rye Squared.) With its mammoth hop aroma, bitterness and flavor, this beer is not for the faint at heart. The Rye Squared clocks in at a hefty 8.5% ABV so double your pleasure and double your fun because Terrapin went a little crazy with this one! The first keg of Rye Squared went on tap at Tasty World in Athens on Monday April 25th 2005. A special thank you goes out to the newly formed Terrapin Keg Killers. We were told that Tasty World would put the Rye Squared on as soon as they finished off a keg of a "Select" beer they had on tap. When the Terrapin Keg Killers heard about this they went to Tasty world and finished off that other keg in record time. By 10pm on Monday they were enjoying the fruits of their labor when the first ever Rye Squared keg went online. Malt: 2-row pale, Munich, Malted Rye, Bisuit Malt, Honey Malt. Hops: Amarillo, Cascade, East Kent Goldings, Fuggle, Magnum

Poured hazy brown like dirty pond water. No head at all. Nose is all rye and malt. Flavors of rye and hops. After taste of a little bread? Nothing too special and I don’t think this has too many qualities of a DIPA, imo.

Bottle from KP. Pours copper color with a thin head and lacing. Aroma is big rye with a touch of floral lemon hops. Big grainy rye flavor, a little sweet. The finish is more lemon and floral hops. Not too bitter. Lots of lingering rye and grain. Insanely drinkable, but too much rye for me.

12 ounce bottle thanks to timtheenchanta 2006 version Gold-orange color out of the bottle producing a great light tan head. Very thick, almost like a Guinness with the carbonation action, leaving a thick dense head. Hoppy citrus aroma with a wallop of alcohol on the nose. Pungent citrus taste up front with a piney finish. Some caramel sweetness. Thick, syrupy mouth feel gives it almost a cough syrup feel going down somewhat reminiscent of DFH120. This was a great beer but almost too sweet. The hops did balance it well. Definitely looking for more.

Copper pour with decent off-white head. Very sweet smelling nose with a bit of citrus. This might be the sweetess tasting double that I’ve had. Very malty with a medium body. Texture coats the palate with the high alcohol letting you know its there. Thanks to ogglethorp.

Shared with Axilla. thanks. Poured amber in color with a medium sized beige head. Aroma is of sweet rye bread. Taste is of rye malts, sweet caramel, bread and mellowed piney hops. Not bad.

Pours a clean red/orange with a sticky off white froth. Aroma is sweet carmel and rye malts with some citrus. Flavor is sweet, somewhat cloying at first, rye malts and pretzals with some piney and grassy hops and mild alcohol notes. Smooth oily palate. Thanks to Capt. Cougar.

Bottle courtesy of hopdog. Thanks Steve! Pours amber with a small fizzy white head. Soft sticky lacing. Aroma is rye, caramel, light toffee, and hops. Taste is citrusy and hoppy with more caramel, sweet malts, and light alcohol. Body is sticky with light carbonation and a medium overall feel. Finishes with more hops, citrus fruits, orange peel, caramel and sweet malts. Tasty!

355mL bottle, vintage 2007, courtesy of kp. Thanks, Keith! Pours a slightly hazy, bright amber-orange color; off-white head with fine-bubbled lacing. Plenty of candy sugar and rye in the aroma; a bit of alcohol poking through. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: plenty of candy sugar, dried fruits, and alcohol upfront; sticky sugars, for the most part, and the hops seem to have diminished enough to bring out some of the warming alcohol underneath; this is reasonably tasty, but for 8.5% one would like to see more malt complexity, especially, and less obvious alcohol. Not a trainwreck, at least. Medium, candy sugar and dried fruit in the finish; quite sticky and sweet.
