Commercial Description:
Double the malt, double the hops, and double the flavor of the original Rye Pale Ale recipe. (Hence the name Rye Squared.) With its mammoth hop aroma, bitterness and flavor, this beer is not for the faint at heart. The Rye Squared clocks in at a hefty 8.5% ABV so double your pleasure and double your fun because Terrapin went a little crazy with this one! The first keg of Rye Squared went on tap at Tasty World in Athens on Monday April 25th 2005. A special thank you goes out to the newly formed Terrapin Keg Killers. We were told that Tasty World would put the Rye Squared on as soon as they finished off a keg of a "Select" beer they had on tap. When the Terrapin Keg Killers heard about this they went to Tasty world and finished off that other keg in record time. By 10pm on Monday they were enjoying the fruits of their labor when the first ever Rye Squared keg went online. Malt: 2-row pale, Munich, Malted Rye, Bisuit Malt, Honey Malt. Hops: Amarillo, Cascade, East Kent Goldings, Fuggle, Magnum

Thanks to all who sent bottles! Pour is a deep auburn with a small white head. I get mostly sweet malt in the aroma, but a little piney hps are there too. Flavor is bitter with nice malt balance. Caramel and roasted malts. Medium body and a bit fizzy.

12 oz, 07 vintage. Deep copper-brown and clear, with a medium head that sorta lasts. Cocoa-malt date and slight alcohol aroma. Flavor is similar, with some sharpness that must be the rye. Pretty nice balance for all the hops reported to have gone in this one. Smooth and light-medium bodied, just a little tingle on the tongue. Slight alcohol-medicinal aftertaste.

Hoppy aroma. Color is dark copper. Small off-white head. Thick mouthfeel. Hop tinglings on the tongue. Big malt background. Well balanced. Thick and syrup like.

Bottle Vintage 2007. The pour is a transparent copper with a diminishing pale head. The aroma is intense in grapefruit with some pine and bready notes. After swirling, the citrus and pine is very dominant. After a couple minutes, the bready notes burst a little more. The flavour is very malty and caramelly sweet. Bread is more apparent in the flavour with the citrus taking the back seat. Rye flavours start to arise. As the brew warms and passes the back of your tongue, the hops becomes more apparent. Notes of rye start to emerge even more. (The rye gives it a different, interesting flavour.) Pine flavours become more intense. Slight bitterness lingers on the back of the tongue as a caramelly sweetness lingers around the rest. The finish is slightly dry, like eating a piece of a bread. This is a very interesting and enjoyable brew.

Terrapin has been doing some unique runs, including this interesting melange Thanks Drunkmonk for sending. Small head with malt and some grapefruit aroma, a good amount of taste, with rye dominating a double IPA hit.

12oz bottle via trade with somone, 2006 vintage. Pours a very nice orange with a thick frothy 1 finger tan head. Nose has some caramel but overall is kinda flat. The taste is very simple, sweet, hoppy and some rye. The mouth feel is thick and viscous thicker than expected. Overall nice tasty brew.

2007 12 oz. bottle. Pours relatively clear, deep amber with a moderate cream colored head with good retention. Sweet carmelly aroma with light floral hops and delicate grainy/rye notes in the back. Full flavor is dominated by sweet, grainy malts with high bitterness for very good balance. Finishes pretty dry, but not bitter. Palate is moderately full, but not syrupy, and very smooth. Alcohol well-hidden. A very well-crafted beer.

Bottle from shigadeyo. Poured a hazy copper color with a medium frothy white head that lasted with excellent lacing. Heavy complex citrus hoppy aroma with a rye tone. Medium to full body with a slick texture. Heavy balanced flavor with a medium bittersweet rye finish of long duration. This is a standout beer and very good double IPA.
