Commercial Description:
Double the malt, double the hops, and double the flavor of the original Rye Pale Ale recipe. (Hence the name Rye Squared.) With its mammoth hop aroma, bitterness and flavor, this beer is not for the faint at heart. The Rye Squared clocks in at a hefty 8.5% ABV so double your pleasure and double your fun because Terrapin went a little crazy with this one! The first keg of Rye Squared went on tap at Tasty World in Athens on Monday April 25th 2005. A special thank you goes out to the newly formed Terrapin Keg Killers. We were told that Tasty World would put the Rye Squared on as soon as they finished off a keg of a "Select" beer they had on tap. When the Terrapin Keg Killers heard about this they went to Tasty world and finished off that other keg in record time. By 10pm on Monday they were enjoying the fruits of their labor when the first ever Rye Squared keg went online. Malt: 2-row pale, Munich, Malted Rye, Bisuit Malt, Honey Malt. Hops: Amarillo, Cascade, East Kent Goldings, Fuggle, Magnum

Thanks to Juancho. Liked it but not loved it. Very unidimensional, the hops are just overpowering, and does not let other flavors to develop.

Bottle. Pours copper with beige head. The aroma is Ritz crackers, lemon, and quite a bit of citrus and spicy rye. The malt is very crackery, with some cotton-candy sweetness. Lemony hops mellow and get sticky with time. Tasty stuff.

Perhaps my favorite example of the style to date. Much more an Imperial English IPA than an American Stong Ale in my opinion. Pours a rich (and clear) emboldened red-brown. Foamy head that quicly recedes to a thinner film. Nose is rich with malts and a slight wintergreen undertone. Alcohol is a bitovertoned and not well hidden but after a bottle one hardly notices. Heavy in malts with a soft butterscotch flavor. More of an alcohol bite than a bittering bite. Medium to full body that expands as it warms. Slightly fragrant.

Light hop aroma. Gold color. Flavor is very sweet, especially for the style. Much more focused on malt than hops. Bitter finish with light apple, but the apple does not seem to be a flaw.

I need to thank both shp555 and captaincougar for sending this to me at the same time. This one pours a dark amber in color with a medium, off white head. Smell is a bit on the sweet side, with a bit of a rye smell as well. Taste is a bit sticky with a nice bread flavor, slight rye in the aftertaste, with just a bit of bitterness. Not entirely sure how this beer is a DIPA, but this is tasty none the less.

bottle-Thanks Badgerben) Pours amber with a white head. Aroma consisted of bread with some hops as well. Taste was malty sweet with a touch of hops at the end, quite good.

[Bottle, thanks badgerben] Poured amber with a small white head. Very sweet with very little bitterness. Good body and smooth going down.

12 oz bottle. Pours a clear amber color with a thin loose white head. Nice sharp floral hop aroma over the rye maltiness mixes nicely. Just a tad of alcohol on the nose. Nice thick sticky palate. The flavor has a citric hop start with the hops tingling on the palate throughout. The rye character gives the beer some heft and prevents the high alcohol content from taking over, which seems to dominate the few "double pales" I’ve had. A good strong ale with some hops, but I wouldn’t pigeonhole it into the DIPA category necessarily.
