Commercial Description:
Double the malt, double the hops, and double the flavor of the original Rye Pale Ale recipe. (Hence the name Rye Squared.) With its mammoth hop aroma, bitterness and flavor, this beer is not for the faint at heart. The Rye Squared clocks in at a hefty 8.5% ABV so double your pleasure and double your fun because Terrapin went a little crazy with this one! The first keg of Rye Squared went on tap at Tasty World in Athens on Monday April 25th 2005. A special thank you goes out to the newly formed Terrapin Keg Killers. We were told that Tasty World would put the Rye Squared on as soon as they finished off a keg of a "Select" beer they had on tap. When the Terrapin Keg Killers heard about this they went to Tasty world and finished off that other keg in record time. By 10pm on Monday they were enjoying the fruits of their labor when the first ever Rye Squared keg went online. Malt: 2-row pale, Munich, Malted Rye, Bisuit Malt, Honey Malt. Hops: Amarillo, Cascade, East Kent Goldings, Fuggle, Magnum

[Bottled at Stockholm Beer Festival] Poors thick hazy golden, no head. Lychee aroma. Medium sweet, soft and full bodued with notes of caramel and rye bread. Loads of hops simmer above. Lingering very bitter finish.

Pours a slightly hazy orangey copper with a frothy khaki head and lots of lacing. Smells of sweet pale malt with a light but strident citrusy hops and a hint of alcohol. Taste is surprisingly malty. Very malty with a warming alcohol. Persistent underpinnings of citrusy hops. Grainy with a distinct rye character in the flavor. Very good. Does Terrapin do anything wrong?

From bottle thanks to Immy. Pours a hazy dark orange with no head. Nose is syrupy orange and sweet malt. Flavor is large malt, with dark fruits, raisin, citrus and a little bitter. Palate is thick with low carbonation. Overall, really tasty.

Dunno why but I was expecting a real hop-monster with this one. I was very surprised at how well balanced it was! Great balance between the hop bite and malty finish! Silky smooth drinker. Very enjoyable!

Bottle from TheBeerCellar2. So, I decided to open a Terrapin while watching WVU take on the Maryland Terrapins. Good thing the brewery doesn’t perform like the team. Hazy golden pour with a nice amount of miniscule floaties. Aroma was pretty nondescript, it’s pretty much what you’d expect from a I2PA. Hoppy at the front, sweet and malty at the finish. I got a little grassy and dry hoppiness in the mouth when cold, but it became more sweet (caramel and honey) the warmer it became. Not bad, pretty average

Bottle: Pours to a clear medium amber with a small light tan head that quickly dies. The aroma is fruity hops, a bit of alcohol, very light bubblegum, a touch of sweet caramel, light spicy rye, and melon. Taste is bitter, fruity hops that show some pine, citrus, juicy sweet grapefruit, spicy rye, sweet caramel, a syrup taste almost like coke though it’s not syrupy in texture, with just a small amount of alcohol present on the palate. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, sticky on the palate.

Pours a cloudy amber with a thin white head. I think that it should have been clear but that I dumped the yeast in because I wasn’t paying attention. Very fruity aroma - almost like a fruit juice. Also hints of malt, but I didn’t get a lot of hoppiness. Smelled like a doppelbock to me. It’s surprisingly thick as well as carbonated in the mouth. The flavors are pretty subdued (well, at least compared to the description), but do well together. I didn’t pick up any rye, but it was quite malty throughout, with only a hint of bitterness. I don’t know if this one was brewed a while ago and the hops have died down or whaat, but this wasn’t much like an IPA to me. Although not even an ale, this really seemed more like a malty doppelbock to me. I can see where other people got cloying from. I don’t really agree, but as it goes down, it definitely leaves a sweet, almost fruit juice taste in the back of your mouth. If you’re OK with that (and I am), it was quite enjoyable.
