Commercial Description:
Double the malt, double the hops, and double the flavor of the original Rye Pale Ale recipe. (Hence the name Rye Squared.) With its mammoth hop aroma, bitterness and flavor, this beer is not for the faint at heart. The Rye Squared clocks in at a hefty 8.5% ABV so double your pleasure and double your fun because Terrapin went a little crazy with this one! The first keg of Rye Squared went on tap at Tasty World in Athens on Monday April 25th 2005. A special thank you goes out to the newly formed Terrapin Keg Killers. We were told that Tasty World would put the Rye Squared on as soon as they finished off a keg of a "Select" beer they had on tap. When the Terrapin Keg Killers heard about this they went to Tasty world and finished off that other keg in record time. By 10pm on Monday they were enjoying the fruits of their labor when the first ever Rye Squared keg went online. Malt: 2-row pale, Munich, Malted Rye, Bisuit Malt, Honey Malt. Hops: Amarillo, Cascade, East Kent Goldings, Fuggle, Magnum

Pours a deep golden hue with a decently sized head. Aroma is sweet sticky malt with a citrusy bouquet of hops. Flavor is typical IIPA but with a bit of spice from the rye....reminded me of BR Hop Rod. The hops were fruity and assertive with a nice clean bitterness. A very, very good brew. Thanks Leopold!

Terrapin Beer Company is the only thing beer in Atlanta that I cherish! Spike is an awesome brewmaster. Rye Squared, is exactly that! Double the malt, double the hops, and double the flavor of the original Rye Pale Ale recipe. I like it so much I buy a whole case of it every year. ($7 a 4pk) Very hazy orange color. Lots of sediment in the bottle. Perfect foamy head. Awesome florals. Long lasting hop finish.

(Bottle via trade with goldtwins, thanks Larry!) Pours a hazy reddish orange with a thin off-white head. Aroma of flowers and pine, caramel and vanilla. Mouthfeel smooth, lightly prickly, a little sticky in finish. Some thin rings of lacing. Flavor is piney and floral, pretty sweet but not sharply so. Some caramel and honey maltiness. This is a pretty deeply flavorful beer. Heavy on the malt, esp. for a big IPA, as well as the hops. The rye comes through in the finish and aftertaste. Pretty nice convergence of flavors.

Sample courtesy of jordanartuso. Pours a hazy peach with a small white head. The aroma is spicey rye, floral, apricots and raisins. The flavor is herbal, rye bread, honey and apricots. Medium body, slightly astringent with a bitter finish.

Thx. Illinismitty. Nose is big sweet caramel, orange, alcohol, strawberries & other fruits, juicy fruit gum - just awesome. Flavor is sweet caramel, cotton candy, great hop bitterness. Lots of fruit going on here. Perhaps a big cloying.

The rye2 pours a nice golden color with a white head that has good retention. The aroma is hoppy, but also very malty as well. You get some sweet aromas in the nose as well. The taste is very nice--plenty of sweet malt behind the big hop profile. The mouthfeell is spot on as well.

12 oz bottle. Clear honey orange; small whitish head. Oven roasted oranges with some caramel. Later prosciutto and rye. Taste is abruptly sweet hops on steroids. Orange-rhubarb marmalade, cherry juice and more rye. Soft body and carb make this nicely drinkable but sticky sweet vs. hyped hops battle not well integrated and a bit overwhelming.
