Commercial Description:
Double the malt, double the hops, and double the flavor of the original Rye Pale Ale recipe. (Hence the name Rye Squared.) With its mammoth hop aroma, bitterness and flavor, this beer is not for the faint at heart. The Rye Squared clocks in at a hefty 8.5% ABV so double your pleasure and double your fun because Terrapin went a little crazy with this one! The first keg of Rye Squared went on tap at Tasty World in Athens on Monday April 25th 2005. A special thank you goes out to the newly formed Terrapin Keg Killers. We were told that Tasty World would put the Rye Squared on as soon as they finished off a keg of a "Select" beer they had on tap. When the Terrapin Keg Killers heard about this they went to Tasty world and finished off that other keg in record time. By 10pm on Monday they were enjoying the fruits of their labor when the first ever Rye Squared keg went online. Malt: 2-row pale, Munich, Malted Rye, Bisuit Malt, Honey Malt. Hops: Amarillo, Cascade, East Kent Goldings, Fuggle, Magnum

Bottle, from trade with goldtwins. Ok nose, sweet. Rye, grapefruit, little orange & nuttiness. ABV is showing itself. Tad hazy brownish orange color, small head that faded real quick. No lacing. Sweet bitter flavor, Like aroma with grapefruit and rye standing out to me. Little of a almond taste. Thicker bodied, smooth creamy mouthfeel, bitterdry finish. Nice, but I didn’t get as strong as aroma as most. Nice overall though. Thanks goldtwins

Wow, another great beer from goldtwins. This one has a hazy, deep coppery/orangy hue, with 1-finger off-white head. The aroma is big hopcitrus, tropical fruit, including tangerine, canteloupe, caramel malt, some pineapple. The palate is dense, really kicked up a notch, with flavors of bready caramel malts, big hops, tangerine, mango, and pineapple. Very well done.

Enjoy by 9/26/06. Bottle provided by aracauna. Thanks! A golden orange pour with a light thin head. A bit hazy. Sweet caramel aroma with grassy orange citrus. It’s a bit of a heavy aroma but it somehow manages to have brightness to it, and something else…doughnuts? The flavor is very enjoyable with creamy malt caramel, and citrus (orange) that manages to be bright despite the full bodiedness. A very well balanced sweetness with the hoppy goodness. Perhaps it is the rye that gives this brew more of a crisp bright feel. Has a nice slick/round body with a bit of a semi-dry finish. Very enjoyable…Get some!

Any first impressions?
-Thick, lofty foam sticks to the turbid orange all the way through, leaving layers of dripping lacing.
-A sumptuous cereal bed is topped by flower petals, citrus fruit and freshly-cut wood.
-The balanced flavor profile is immensely tasty, yet never aggressive, but then again that rye is so portly it can easily keep all hops in check.
-A scrumptious, chewy body of rye maltiness gives you the distinct impression that you are being thoroughly nourished.

What if you dig deeper?
-The finishing resinous and peppery hop bitterness is gentle and effective.
-The malty toastiness fits well with the wooden bark hop character.
-Alcohol is barely a factor in the flavor profile.
-This juicy piece of heaven is a superb example of what American craft brewers should be proud of having achieved.

2006 model. Slightly hazy, orangish tan ith a small off-white head. Pleasing earthy, citrus, spicey aroma. Heavy, sticky mouthfeel. Citrus, a touch of pine. Pepper, plum. Big malt in the smooth finish.

Bottle: Orange, misty appearance, light head, average lacing. Nose of orange flesh, pine sap, lime and sichuan pepper. The flavor is spicy, rich, toasy and a bit funky. Lots of biscuity, clean and snappy rye, some sweet floral hops. Nice numbing, delicate and moderate alcohol beer.

Dark orange pour with a lasting tan head with nice lacing. Sweet citrus orange aroma with a bit of caramel and malt in the background. Taste is very citrusy, with some floral hops as well. Orange, grapefruit, pineapple and lemon. Malt fills in the middle and the hops linger into the finish, not too sweet, but crisp and bitter. It really ’does’ taste like they doubled everything in their original rye recipe, which I happen to drink a lot of. Surprisingly balanced but I think I would have liked it a bit more were it a hop-bomb like so many other doubles.

Two good to be true (pun intended). Terrapin whips out two good double IPAs. Kudos. Golden amber body with a moderate off-white head. Pleasantly sweet hoppy aroma is inviting. Some spice and pine, bread dough. Medium body, moderate carbonation, a little welcomed oiliness. The flavor was refreshing, crisp, clean, slightly sweet with the bitterness. Between this and the Hoppy Monster, I could spend a nice summer drinking.IPAs.
