Commercial Description:
Double the malt, double the hops, and double the flavor of the original Rye Pale Ale recipe. (Hence the name Rye Squared.) With its mammoth hop aroma, bitterness and flavor, this beer is not for the faint at heart. The Rye Squared clocks in at a hefty 8.5% ABV so double your pleasure and double your fun because Terrapin went a little crazy with this one! The first keg of Rye Squared went on tap at Tasty World in Athens on Monday April 25th 2005. A special thank you goes out to the newly formed Terrapin Keg Killers. We were told that Tasty World would put the Rye Squared on as soon as they finished off a keg of a "Select" beer they had on tap. When the Terrapin Keg Killers heard about this they went to Tasty world and finished off that other keg in record time. By 10pm on Monday they were enjoying the fruits of their labor when the first ever Rye Squared keg went online. Malt: 2-row pale, Munich, Malted Rye, Bisuit Malt, Honey Malt. Hops: Amarillo, Cascade, East Kent Goldings, Fuggle, Magnum

2006 bottle via CaptainCougar. The beer pours to a nice 24 k golden body with a thick off-white/yellow head. The aroma is Curaçao oranges, nice biscuity malts, rye bread. Notes of pine needles dance about. The flavor is Curaçao oranges, bitter pineyness, nice maltyness, leafy hops, and a spicy zing. Quite unique for an IIPA. I like the strong Curaçao orange characteristics. The palate is medium bodied, lightly resiny, and bitter. Nice creamy mouthfeel.

Poured a deep amber in color with a thin off-white head. Nice lacing. The first thing that comes to mind when I get a touch of the aroma is "candy." Caramel, sweeeeet malts, maybe some plum-like fruit notes. Nice, rich malty flavor with a light hop finish and slightly bittersweet undercurrent. Slightly syrupy on the palate, but not in a bad way. Full bodied. Very, very good.

Bottle 2006 tour poured a clear orange amber with a small lasting off white head. Aromas of carmel, earthiness, a hint of pine and a bit of mandarin orange. Palate was medium bodied and slightly dry. Flavors of carmel, light pine, earthinessand orange with a smooth lingering lightly bitter finish.

Bottle (12oz). Shared with blankboy and tupalev, blankboy’s bottle. Poured murky deep orange with some sediment (hops!), an average creamy/foamy off-white head. Mix of funky and resiny/citrus hops, muted but thick, lots of juicy malt and a hint of lactose - sweet, reminds me weirdly of fresh pumpkin. Initial taste of caramel-sweet thick malt, then a big kick of booze, some indeterminate hop bitterness added to the booze bitterness at the end, some orange zest character. Mouthfeel is decently thick, almost syrupy, and it’s a little astringent and lightly carbonated, but primarily this is boozy. Interesting, I liked the regular much more; an experiment indeed, that Green Mad Scientist must have been sniffing the ether ...

Beer pours irradescent orange with a totally retained off white head. Aroma is citrus hops with some serious malt to back it up, a bit caramel as well. Flavor is sweet caramel malt; then the hops kick in a you get some really nice hop bitterness. Body is very full and lush. Thanks to Bu11zye for the freebie!!! Appreciate it man.

Thanks to heemer77 for the 12oz bottle. Pours an orange copper with a tiny fizzy film. Aroma of raisins, caramel malts, alcohol, some pine, woody, and resinous hops. Very grassy and herbal up front, pine, resin, and woody hops showing up as well, though I can’t tell you which one. Slightly bitter cereal grain finish. Full bodied, medium-light carbonation.

Hoppy scent! Hazy dirty yellow colour. Very hoppy, malty flavour with a kick of alcohol afterwards.
