Commercial Description:
Double the malt, double the hops, and double the flavor of the original Rye Pale Ale recipe. (Hence the name Rye Squared.) With its mammoth hop aroma, bitterness and flavor, this beer is not for the faint at heart. The Rye Squared clocks in at a hefty 8.5% ABV so double your pleasure and double your fun because Terrapin went a little crazy with this one! The first keg of Rye Squared went on tap at Tasty World in Athens on Monday April 25th 2005. A special thank you goes out to the newly formed Terrapin Keg Killers. We were told that Tasty World would put the Rye Squared on as soon as they finished off a keg of a "Select" beer they had on tap. When the Terrapin Keg Killers heard about this they went to Tasty world and finished off that other keg in record time. By 10pm on Monday they were enjoying the fruits of their labor when the first ever Rye Squared keg went online. Malt: 2-row pale, Munich, Malted Rye, Bisuit Malt, Honey Malt. Hops: Amarillo, Cascade, East Kent Goldings, Fuggle, Magnum

Hoppy scent! Hazy dirty yellow colour. Very hoppy, malty flavour with a kick of alcohol afterwards.

Huge thanks to CaptainCougar for sending me this in our last trade. Great cloudy goldish-orange body with a light white head. Excellent aroma, very similar to the Big Hoppy Monster, yet with a nice pale ale addition. More malts seem to be the difference in it as it takes away from some of the hops aroma. Good body, smooth with a nice crispness. Excellent taste, hops are extremely evident but there is a large rye and malt presence that isn’t there in a normal Imperial IPA. If anything can be called an Imperial Pale Ale this is it.

Hazed light amber color with a moderate off-white head. Caramel malts, with a dry floral, weed aroma. Caramel and only a hint of light fruit. Mild dry ragweed and pine wood hops influance. A touch of white pepper late in the quaff, provides a light burn. The alcohol is not really detected unless the white pepper is induced by it, but I didn’t seem to sense that. An interesting offer. Thanks ross for the bonus.

Bottle. Peach, tangerine and hops aroma. Dark amber orange with moderate head. LIght tangerine malt up front quickly overwhelmed by the hops. Long bitter aftertaste. Well balanced - hops flavor is not overwhelming. My dog likes it too and she’s pretty picky about her beer.

2006. Hazy orange. Small, dense, off white head. Lemony citrus, floral perfume, resin, dry multigrain toast, definite dose of rye in the flavor. Medium/full body, mostly balanced, just little syrupy. Great brew. Thanks to NachlamSie for dealin.

Bottle. Pours hazy orange---in fact not only hazy but with visible floating debris---with a nice lingering white head. Aroma is hoppy, mostly of pine, but also some light fruits and a bit of sweetness. Flavor is a little more tilted towards the sweet and lightly fruity malt, which is nicely balanced by the hops (still piney) and what I assume is the rye. Gets a bit more herbal/vegetal as it warms, along with a distinctive orange aroma and other miscellaneous aromas and flavors. Fairly thick and slightly sticky mouthfeel. An excellently balanced and quite complex IIPA; highly recommended.

12 oz bottle courtesy of goldtwins. Hazy orange with a thick sticky off white head. Great lacing and a really good-looking beer. Loads of sweet tropical hops come spilling out of this one, tangerine, pineapple, peaches and grapefruit. Light spicy hop note in back of all the american hops. Sweet maltiness, pale malt mostly with a hint of rye adding complexity. Flavour is very sweet but not cloying. The rye spiciness wasn’t there is the regular rye ale, but here it is apparent, if subtle. As the beer warms, the rye becomes a bit more prominent. Sweet tropical hops, peach, pineapple, grapefruit, papaya which plays well off of all of the sweet malts and slightly herbal character of the rye. Alcoholic warming sensation, but not hot on the palate. Some orangey notes as the beer warms. Moderate bitterness. Sticky full mouthfeel. Really tasty brew. That dirty Baltika 9 is all but forgotten.

(Bottle) Pours a deep amber with a moderate off-white head. Aroma of cotton candy, toffee, toasted marshmellows, and pine. Flavor of toasted malt, caramel, and hops. Big malt in this IIPA.
