Commercial Description:
Double the malt, double the hops, and double the flavor of the original Rye Pale Ale recipe. (Hence the name Rye Squared.) With its mammoth hop aroma, bitterness and flavor, this beer is not for the faint at heart. The Rye Squared clocks in at a hefty 8.5% ABV so double your pleasure and double your fun because Terrapin went a little crazy with this one! The first keg of Rye Squared went on tap at Tasty World in Athens on Monday April 25th 2005. A special thank you goes out to the newly formed Terrapin Keg Killers. We were told that Tasty World would put the Rye Squared on as soon as they finished off a keg of a "Select" beer they had on tap. When the Terrapin Keg Killers heard about this they went to Tasty world and finished off that other keg in record time. By 10pm on Monday they were enjoying the fruits of their labor when the first ever Rye Squared keg went online. Malt: 2-row pale, Munich, Malted Rye, Bisuit Malt, Honey Malt. Hops: Amarillo, Cascade, East Kent Goldings, Fuggle, Magnum

The amarillo hops really stand out in this one (atleast to me). Pours with a slight beige head as many have mentioned. A very sweet and subtle roasted smell accompanied by a slight citrusy hop aroma. A light amber color to match with it’s lighter carbonation as well.

Another great beer from Captain Cougar. And another thanks Tom. Light amber color with a decent beige head. Very floral aroma with roasted caramel. Full bodied with creamy carbonation. Fruit, oak, oak, spice, caramel, ... wood. Finish is dry and bitter - more that just that mild floral bitter. Must be the wood. There is vanilla, but very minor - to me. Just a really good ale. Almost barley wine?

On Tap at Mad Mex in Cranberry. Really nice for hop heads, with that dry character that comes from the rye base. Dark amber but not much head or lacing.

Quietest pour ever. Transparent red-amber with a nice yellow-beige head. Nose is piney, some grain, and sawdust/wood. More rye in the flavor, also more pine, orange, and caramel. Very sweet, silky, and slightly sticky. Too sweet and sticky for me, but the woody pine notes meshed well with the rye and it was rather balanced throughout.

Bottle from Santa. Dark, reddish brown colored pour with nice, tight off white head. Lightly hopped aroma with some sweetness and a bit of rye. Flavor starts off hoppy, but the covered by a wash of sweet malt. Nice rye in the finish along with good bitter hops. Good carbonation, nice mouthfeel. Great beer. Thanks Matt!

Very nice appearance and pour. No foam when poured into glass. Has a smooth taste with a nice bitter finish. Earthy, piney, subtle fruit characters. A very enjoyable IPA.

Review date 6/30/2009... Vintage 2009 gem from the Terps...into the Duvel tulip it goes... This pours a viscous-like, honey-straw color. Topping it off is a solid, chunky, full finger o’ head. Darkens with full pour to reveal more of a butterscotch tone. Head retains well - tight and bready. Lacing to match. Rye makes itself nicely known here...along with a fair amount of mellow, grassy hops. Slight caramel notes here - maybe a little more straw taste. Man, I do enjoy rye in my beer. It has that little spice but keeps the body very full with a different sweetness from light caramel malt. Hops have a little grass on ’em but it works quite nicely. Viscous sweetness indicates a fair amount of ABV but it’s extremely balanced. Nice stuff. This stuff treats the palate like an old recliner. Just sit down, chill out and make yourself comfortable. Slight thickness doesn’t translate to weight. Nice rye bite keeps it a little spritely, as does very moderate carbonation. Finish is well-balanced and even keeled...maybe a little on the sweeter side. Excellent. This may not drink extremely quickly but it drinks extremely well. If I lived in or frequented Atlanta I’d have a fair amount of this stashed in the fridge at all times.
