Commercial Description:
Double the malt, double the hops, and double the flavor of the original Rye Pale Ale recipe. (Hence the name Rye Squared.) With its mammoth hop aroma, bitterness and flavor, this beer is not for the faint at heart. The Rye Squared clocks in at a hefty 8.5% ABV so double your pleasure and double your fun because Terrapin went a little crazy with this one! The first keg of Rye Squared went on tap at Tasty World in Athens on Monday April 25th 2005. A special thank you goes out to the newly formed Terrapin Keg Killers. We were told that Tasty World would put the Rye Squared on as soon as they finished off a keg of a "Select" beer they had on tap. When the Terrapin Keg Killers heard about this they went to Tasty world and finished off that other keg in record time. By 10pm on Monday they were enjoying the fruits of their labor when the first ever Rye Squared keg went online. Malt: 2-row pale, Munich, Malted Rye, Bisuit Malt, Honey Malt. Hops: Amarillo, Cascade, East Kent Goldings, Fuggle, Magnum

12oz bottle served in a Duvel tulip. Pours reddish amber with a half inch of lasting off-white head. Spicy floral aroma with notes of pineapple, citrus, and a faint hint of chocolate. The flavor has a sweet bready base with some spicy hops layered over top. Notes of pineapple, tangerine, grapefruit zest, and pine. Medium bitterness for the style. Would have scored higher if the alcohol wasn’t so apparent.

Bottle by way of BeerHawk – thanks Steve! Pours slightly hazy amber with a 2 finger off-white head that leaves decent lacing. The nose is soapy hops and malt. The taste is sweet citrus, malt and spicy rye in the finish. Medium mouthfeel. The rye is much more pronounced in the squared version. Good beer – thanks again Steve!

Bottle. Aroma big on juicy, seedy citrus notes with rich, caramelly malt wafting beneath, but also sort of becoming one with the citrus, making it sweet citrus. Rye shows up in the mouth, which is a nice plus, though the intense, sweet malt starts to compete, rather than blend with, the intense, seedy bitterness. Each wants the lead role, and they’re not playing nice. Still pretty tasty, just a little odd that there seems to be a bit much clashing from the two sides of things.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber/brown with a thick off-white head. Aroma of sweet malt, citrus, and sweet tropical fruits. Flavor is sweet and fruity initially with malt and rye in the finish. A little on the sweet side but otherwise decent. 7/4/8/4/14 (3.7/5)

12 oz. bottle. Poured dark amber with nice head. Lots of sweet caramel and spicy rye malt flavor. Subdued piney hoppiness. Somewhat of a silky mouthfeel. One of the rare IIPAs that is more on the malty side rather than the typical hopbomb.

12 oz. bottle. Pours an amber color with a light off-white head. Interesting rye flavor, presumably rye? Otherwise traditional IPA floral bitterness. Light to medium bodied. Finishes a little tight. Not bad.

Amber pour with an off white head. Nice citrusy hop aroma, rye, and malts. Nice hop flavor, little sweetness. Nice aftertaste of hops and touch of alcohol. A great balance of a lot of hops and big malt and rye flavors. This is a great beer. Nice lacing on the glass.

This poured a light opranage color with a big off white head. Aroma was citrusy hops, some sweet malts and rye as well. flavor was alot sweeter than I had expected, a lot more than shuold be there for the hops to cover up. The original is much better.
