Commercial Description:
Double the malt, double the hops, and double the flavor of the original Rye Pale Ale recipe. (Hence the name Rye Squared.) With its mammoth hop aroma, bitterness and flavor, this beer is not for the faint at heart. The Rye Squared clocks in at a hefty 8.5% ABV so double your pleasure and double your fun because Terrapin went a little crazy with this one! The first keg of Rye Squared went on tap at Tasty World in Athens on Monday April 25th 2005. A special thank you goes out to the newly formed Terrapin Keg Killers. We were told that Tasty World would put the Rye Squared on as soon as they finished off a keg of a "Select" beer they had on tap. When the Terrapin Keg Killers heard about this they went to Tasty world and finished off that other keg in record time. By 10pm on Monday they were enjoying the fruits of their labor when the first ever Rye Squared keg went online. Malt: 2-row pale, Munich, Malted Rye, Bisuit Malt, Honey Malt. Hops: Amarillo, Cascade, East Kent Goldings, Fuggle, Magnum

Had this on tap at Humphrey’s in Huntsville the other day. Smooth, but dry for a double IPA. Nice hops which I have become familiar with drinking the Terrapins.

Clean, crisp, chlorine-y smell that does not belie the hops beneath. Unique aroma. Really, smells a lot like a tavern with dried beer on the floor, but I fully mean that in a good way. I’m really pleased with myself because with this beer I’ve finally pinned down the flavor of a particular hops variety: Amarillo. This is a tasty beer. Not a huge fan of cloudy beers visually but if they taste good who cares.

Orange amber color with a slight hazy. Creamy off white head. Honey sweet nose with lots of candied orange rind and some pine. Tastes of old fashioned buscuits with honey. Thick, slick mouthfeel. Lots of hops in here with grapefruit rind, apricot, apple sauce, and a long bitter hop resin finish. It hides the 8.5% very well. Great mouthfeel on this one. Thanks to whomever sent this bottle to me in trade.

great aroma of rye and malt alongside piney, earthy, citrus hop notes. not much hop bitterness. taste is very flavorful with a lot of malt and rye to go with the hoppiness. def more of an Impy pale than an india. good stuff

Bottle, $2.95 at Wine Warehouse, Charlottesville. Pours an orange-amber with an inch of head. Aroma is chocolate malts and toast. A lot of malt in the mouth along with dark chocolate. Malts definitely overpower the hops.

Pours a hazy golden amber with a decent sized white head.... Aroma is somewhat hoppy, caramel malty, slightly fruity with some noticable spiciness... Flavor has some rye in behind a creamy body filled with sweet malts and some hops... A little weighty, creamy, medium full bodied... Aside from the Coffee Oatmeal, Terrapin has fallen a bit short of expectations....

2007 Bottle - Thanks brentfeesh! - Pours deep orange and conjures up a small off white head...aroma is spicy rye and heat, honey, caramel and citrus follow closely...flavour is initially straight rubbing alcohol, hop resin with a lingering bitterness, pineapple and nail polish remover...harsh stuff...would love to try a newer bottle to compare as they seem to have ironed out some issues...
