Commercial Description:
2008 will forever be known in professional brewing circles as the year of the Hop Shortage. Brewers everywhere are scrambling to find hops just to produce their standard line of beers. Some are so nervous they are even cutting back on brewing hoppy beers. NOT US! In typical Terrapin fashion we are going against the grain (or against the hops, so the speak). If there is going to be a shortage of hops, why not put them all into one huge hop bomb of a beer? We hope you enjoy our HOP SHORTAGE ALE.

bomber split with Tronraner. Pours a golden hue with a small head. Seems pretty clear. The nose is definitely hoppy, but in a middle of the road way. Strong pineapple and some orange is noted, but it doesn’t seem to fully develop and cut through the biscuity malts. . .but in a weird way it does. I can’t really describe it. It’s kind of lacking a sharper edge. The mouthfeel is medium. Some good orange and pineapple comes through along with a pitty, dry finish. This is a pretty straight up American styled pale ale. It’s crisp and citrusy but I could use some more hops, man.

Bomber, shared by NachlamSie. Pours a shiny brass color with off white head. The aroma is pineapple, saltine crackers, leaves, and a spicy rye-like note. The flavor is fruity and floral hops, smooth honeyish malt. The finish is pretty dry, and lingers into the aftertaste, as do some grainy notes. The more I sip, the more tangerine notes I get. Ok.

thanks to the phx BA guys for allowing me to try this... pours and orange gold color with a thin white head and light spotty lacing. very floral almost soapy aroma with hints of wheat, cooked lemons, pale malt and woody, grassy and dried herbal like hops. the taste is fairly similar but very light on the sweetness and hop bite. aftertaste is citrus pith. medium body with a rather oily slick mouth feel.

Pours a hazy brown with thin head. Smells of citrusy hop goodness. Taste fairly hoppy with nice cirtus note. Not bad. Could have more balance, but I’d buy again.

Pours orange with thin white head. Aroma of floral hops. Taste is hops and that is about it. Way too thin mouthfeel. Watery finish. Basic IPA, not bad but nothing special either.

New Terrapin in the store, Awesome! Must be like Big Hoppy Monster, or Rye 2, or even as good as Wake n Bake. Wrong. Not anywhere close. Pours out an orange color with a white head on it. The first smell is something kind of rancid smelling. But looking past that - I smelled the hops and grass that make this an IPA. The taste was something that was all together unpleasing, and not really good. I am not sure, maybe its the "shortage" of hops that makes this beer just bad. But its more like the "shortage" of malts that leave it with no backbone to balance the bitterness. Sort of like an English IPA, only gone bad. Not really good at all, and I am very disappointed with this; as I come to expect alot more from Terrapin.

22oz from Sam’s, Durham. I hate to beat the proverbial dead horse, but . . . at 10 or 11 bucks a sixer, this would be just the ticket. But at 7 for a bomber, it’s a bit of a rip. Not much of a distinctive aroma on the pour. Relatively admirable beer to look at, but certainly nothing that prompts a double-take. And despite Terrapin’s promo, eh, it’s not all that hoppy. Just a kind of typical SNPA-type brew at greater cost.

Lovely orange-copper pour with medium head. Really nice aromas of pine, citrus, bitter sweetness. Grapefruit, pine, and a little caramel malt on the palate. Hoppy, but not over the top. A little thin on the end of the taste, perhaps because this beer probably would have benefitted from another percent of alcohol. Very nice overall.
