mgumby10 (1650), West Palm Beach, Florida, USA Jul 14, 2008 Courtesy TURDFERGUSON. Pours a pretty clear light maroon color, with a small off white head. Smells of light smoky campfire, some dark fruit, and heavy malt. A little medicinal though in its aroma. The flavor is more on the bland side. The smoke was there, but it almost seemed artificial in some sense. Pretty bitter throughout the experience, and fairly devoid of any appealing flavor. Wasnt offensive, but it seems like they didnt put much effort into making it interesting at all.
Ughsmash (3079), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Oct 10, 2008 Bomber. Poured medium coppery-brown with a short, swirly cap of off-white head. The aroma picked up lightly-smoked wood and toffee over richer caramel.. just a touch of rye influence, which worked nicely.. subtle overall and well-composed. The flavor had tangy, lightly sour smoked wood and spicy rye over a caramelly base.. a touch more sour than I was looking for, but still alright. Light-medium bodied with low carbonation on the palate.. ashy finish.. overall quite nice. Headbanger (1001), Aurora, Illinois, USA Oct 6, 2008 2oz bottle (Knightly Spirits Orlando)-Pours a dark amber light brown body with a nice small tight off white head. Aroma of caramel, malt, and slight smoke. Taste of the same with the rye coming out and the smoke being on the back end. This medium bodied brew finishes dry. Nice tasting brew but was expecting more smoke. EithCubes (1824), Indiana, USA Oct 3, 2008 Bomber via dchmela - big thanks! Nice, lasting smoked flavor flowing from the bottleneck, light caramel and crusty ryebread, less "meaty" than, say, Schlernkerla, but still super. Light toast malts. Copper-chestnut pour still letting the sun shine in, beige head is rocky and yummy. Sticky, lightly bitter, very malty taste has superb lager crispness with heavy caramel and medium smoke, letting smoke sidle in and make itself known without dominating . Chewy toast malt. Excellent, churning spice undertones from the rye. Sagging a little (I’d have loved to have this in July), and tending slowly toward the mushy side, but still a good session-plus. I am a lover of smoked beers, but in this one, the Roggen wins points over the Rauch. Beer_Hawk (759), Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA Sep 29, 2008 Bottle shared by Butters. Pours soda-brown with a off-white head that leaves light lacing. Sweet caramel aroma. The flavor finds caramel, spice, and some smoke. Medium body, sweet throughout with a smoke aftertaste. Decent. Aroma was actually very little smoke. I smelled mushrooms and tree bark! Flavor was very mild. Just some slight flavor of rye, and something a bit sour/funky I couldnt really indentify. Some light smoke on the finish. Overall, very drinkable, and not nearly as smokey as I was expecting!
