Commercial Description:
At Terrapin we enjoy our rye and our smoke...beers. Volume 2 in the "Side Project" series combines a Rogenbier and a Rauchbier, two German classics. Roggen means rye, Rauch means smoke, and bier means beer. We love them all! Introducing Terrapin’s Roggenrauchbier. With a slight hint of spice from the rye malt and a pleasant overtone from the smoked malt this beer has two great tastes that taste great together.

Pours with an amber body topped by a medium thick, off-white head with a good amount of lacing. It’s sweet and malty with moderately smokey notes. Light to medium bodied and smooth.

Bottle from Knightly Spirits. Pours a dark amber and a small tannish head. The nose is very subtle with notes of caramel. Flavors are also subtle with weak smoke, nuts, and cola. Medium/high carbonation and medium body. I was a little disappointed by this one. It was good, but not smoky enough for me.

22oz. bottle from Willow Bend Liquors in Lutz, FL. Pours caramel brown with a small tan head. Aroma is a litte bit of smoked meats, campfire, and some caramel...Aroma just isnt strong enough. Flavor is smoky malt, with some caramel and rye...Very smooth, not much of an aftertase, medium-light mouthfeel. Overall...this is a pretty good smoke beer...Not as good as the Aecht Schlenkerla Urbock. Aroma could have been much better.

Bottle at Sharp Edge Creek House. A delicious smoked beer. Aroma is what killed this beer. Aroma was near nothing with just a hint of smoke. Pour was a nice deep murky brown with a one finger off white head. Taste was nice and malty with a strong smokiness to it. The sweet rye undertones make this beer different and unique. Could have used a bit more carbonation but nice anyone.

Poured a clear copper color with an off-white head. Smoke and phenolic aroma. Mild caramel notes. Caramel malt with a smoky middle and finish. Almost a medium body. Smoky finish.

22oz bottle acquired in trade with emacgee (thanks!). Poured a medium to deeper copperish color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of some smoked meats, caramel, and rye. Tastes of caramel, some smokiness, rye bread, and some light spiciness. The smoke was stronger than the aroma and on the subtle side in the tastes. I did like the rye in this.

bomber from my nc hookup ucusty...

pale woody/walnut stained brown color with an orange tint and a fleeting white head. very faint smell... lightly smokey with notes of some unknown fruit, a touch of caramel sweetness, mild spice and flowers. the flavor is very... gentle? idk. oddly enough it’s not smokey but it does have a distinct sourness from the rye. that faint spiciness shows up again and is joined by wood and a floral prickly finish. the aftertaste is where the smoke finally decides to show up. it has a thin mouth feel even for the style. though, it is very dry throughout so, that’s a plus.

this fits ’volume 2’ quite well... it has everything just turned down to two... 6/3/6/3/12/3.0
