Commercial Description:
At Terrapin we enjoy our rye and our smoke...beers. Volume 2 in the "Side Project" series combines a Rogenbier and a Rauchbier, two German classics. Roggen means rye, Rauch means smoke, and bier means beer. We love them all! Introducing Terrapin’s Roggenrauchbier. With a slight hint of spice from the rye malt and a pleasant overtone from the smoked malt this beer has two great tastes that taste great together.

Bottle and shared with tjthresh: Coppery hue with a small frothy head and some lace. The aroma has notes of mild meaty and woody smoke, caramel and toast, a hint of grassy hop, apricot and starfruit esters and even a hint of vanilla... but I still expected more smoke and rye honestly. The taste has moderate smoke and sweet malt forefront, some mild bitterness in the background with a fruity tone as well. The mouth feel started refreshing before the ashy dry finish started to dominate. A solid enough bier but almost no rye character to be found which makes me sad and needed to be a bit more smoky too, dumbed down methinks.

My bottle (650ml) shared with garthicus, GregClow, jerc & mabel -- courtesy of MrFacto. Pours a clear deep orange-copper with a small off-white head -- nice! Aroma: How about that, it does smell like a Rye beer meets a Smoked beer: It’s bready, kind of sweet, along with caramel malt, rye, some light smoke and fruit -- there’s quite a bit going on here. Flavour follows the aroma and adds some spices in the lightly bitter finish. Good body for the style. I really enjoyed it, I’d happily drink a bomber of this.

2009-01-16. Dark amber brown body with a modest beige head. (3+) Mild smoke aroma up front, nail polish remover and bubble gum, mild fruit. Flavour is likewise, muted smoke, sweet base malt, some fruit touches. Average palate. Smoke is surprisingly mild actually, but theres not enough other stuff to pull me in, and I don’t care for smoke. Bottle shared by Blankboy

pours copper with frothy tan head. Aroma of light smoke, caramel malts with dark fruits and honey like nose. Taste. Good notes of smoke, roasted malts and light hops.I can’t help but notice some dark fruits with the rye being very faint. The overall smoke is light, remaining well in the after taste. The palate is light and smooth with a lasting caramel / smoke mouthfeel. A good smoke beer, low in alcohol, only regret is that the smoke had been a little more up front. With this low abv, the beer is highly enjoyable

A healthy pour produces a three finger thick, amber tinged, tan colored head. The beer is a deep amber-red color that shows a brilliantly clear, brassy, bright ruby / amber hue when held up to the light. The aroma has a sweet smokiness to it up front. The sweetness accentuates a soft berry character and the smoke mixes in with the spicy grain notes. This is not an overly smoky beer, but it is the most noticeable part of the aroma.

Sweet tasting up front, but this has a richness to it from both the smoke and the grain character that tempers the sweetness quite well. This has a full on Beech wood smoke flavor to it that is a bit more pronounced than the aroma might have suggested. Conversely though there are a lot of other flavors going on in the flavor profile of this beer such that the smokiness is not as dominant as it was in the aroma. This has a chewy, viscous heft to it that tends to stick to the palate and actually has the smoke stick to the palate as it lingers on after each sip; this is definitely on the thick side for a beer of this strength, it makes me wonder how much of the viciousness comes from the rye malt. There is a peppery spiciness to the finish of this beer that helps to dry out the up front sweetness along with the smoke. The up front sweetness is more clean, though not cloying, it does linger through to the finish, but actual becomes richer and more caramelized in the end.

A second pour of this 22oz bottle injects a bit more carbonation and helps to lighten the body by cutting through the viciousness. The spiciness in the finish also seems to be contributed a bit from the hop character, which also provides a nice low level, but definitely biting bitterness to the finish of this beer. This is definitely a nice beer to sit down and enjoy a 22oz bottle of. It really drinks like a meal and at only 5.7% it won’t get you schnokkered.

Bomber pours a clear copper body with a small beige head that leaves some sheet lacing. Aroma is fresh baked rye bread, citrusy hops, and country ham. Smoke is much more prominent in the taste, epsecially as it warms, imparting a big smoked bacon flavor. Rye adds a nice creamy twang. Enjoyable change of pace.
