Commercial Description:
At Terrapin we enjoy our rye and our smoke...beers. Volume 2 in the "Side Project" series combines a Rogenbier and a Rauchbier, two German classics. Roggen means rye, Rauch means smoke, and bier means beer. We love them all! Introducing Terrapin’s Roggenrauchbier. With a slight hint of spice from the rye malt and a pleasant overtone from the smoked malt this beer has two great tastes that taste great together.

I am not a big fan of rauchbier, but this was very good. It poured an amber color with an off-white head. Aroma was of dirt, ash, band-aid, and smoke. Flavor is slightly lagery with mellowing malty tones. Very smooth once it mellow about mid-swallow. I would buy this again, and definitely cook with it.

Bottle from Butters. Thank God I didnt have to buy this one either. Pours out a brown color without much of a head. Smell is funky with some smoke in it. Nothing else really, the smoke pretty much masks it. Taste is smokey and nasty. Terrapin’s side projects are 0/2 for me. This shit was gross.

Bottle from Butters. Pours a translucent copper with a light tan head. Aroma is almost wisky like, sweet malts and smoke. Lighter side of medium bodied. Flavor of rye, caramel, and mild smoke. Smooth lagery finish. Decent, but nothing too complex. Nice beer for food pairing

Oxidationfest Tasting at illinsmittys. Pours a clear brown with ruby highlights and almost no head. Aroma is uniquely bacony and sweet caramel malt. Nicely smoked flavor, bacon. Interesting mix of rye and smoke.

Bottle from World of Beer (Westchase, FL). Pours a dark amber color with an off-white head. Some retention and lacing. Aroma is strange with notes of wet dog, smoke, roasted malts, nuts, bread. Flavor is strange as well, although better than the nose. Notes of roasted meat and veggies, malted barley, smoke and mild sweetness are present. Medium body with a smokey and malty finish. Good for a lager.

Aroma - Smokiness is obvious and moderately assertive, some caramel and spice come through eventually

Appearance - Clear reddish brown with a medium off white head that settles quickly

Flavor - Nice dark toffee sweetness matches up well with the smoked malt, and the rye spiciness makes it’s presence known. There’s a slight tanginess in the finish, which seems neutral to me.

Palate - Medium bodyand carbonation, and there is a certain richness in the mouthfeel that is not expected. Smooth, goes down easily.

Overall - Seems like you either like smoked beers or you don’t, not many middle of the roaders. Personally, I like them, and I found this to be pretty good. Not super smoky like Schlenkerla, but not real subtle either. The rye malt adds another dimension that seem to match up well with the smoke.

22-oz bottle received via trade with dchmela. Pours clear tawny with a small, off-white head, mostly diminishing with spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (hay, straw, toasted grain), light hops (herbs), average yeast (earth, meat) with notes of wood and smoke. Medium bodied, slick texture, average carbonation, and a chalky finish. Average duration, light sweetness, acidity, and bitterness.

(Draught) Pours hazy deep amber body with a small off-white head. Aroma of rye, smoke, caramel, and dusty. Flavor of rye, smoke, earthy, dry roasted nuts, and somewhat candish.
