Black coffee colour with a brown head that was thick but not long lasting. The aroma is chock full of chocolate and dark roasted coffee. The palate was thinner than I expected which was quite dissapointing. the flavour was nice but a bit subdued. The coffee was definatly present with more chocolate and roast notes.

10/13/2006: 2006 from illinismitty. Very deep dark brown; as close to black as possible without actually being black. Moderate carbonation & a brown crown. Pours like old motor oil; it just looks thick, but silky at the same time. Aroma is so intriguing & inviting: Chocolate, coffee, dark malt, charred wood. Flavor is very deep & rich flooding the tongue with tastes of dark chocolate, coffee, cola. Finishes like a fine cup of espresso with some cola. There is even an almost imperceptible hint of smoke or charred wood as in the flavor too. The lingering flavor reminds me of the taste of sucking on whole coffee beans. The bitterness of the beer is extremely balanced & the alcohol is nearly invisible. Medium body & is very glossy & smooth on the palate. Overall it is pretty intense & complex with so many aromas & flavors drifting around in it. I think it is great & I am extremely disappointed that this fine beer isn’t readily available in Ohio. Rating: 7/4/8/4/17=4

2006 Vintage - 11/15/2008: Pours out in a silent & silky near-black stream. It swirls slowly in the glass, but has very little carbonation & really no head or crown. The aroma is rich creamy chocolate with hints of sweet, charred malt, coffee. The flavor is also rich & starts sweeet with deeply caramelized malts & some char, then fine, smooth alcohol, & finally indulgent bold & robust coffee. As it warms, the oatmeal flavor & texture becomes more apparent. There is also a thread of what I can only describe as sweet citrus-like candy that must be from the aged hops. Body is medium-full & it’s mellow & velvety on the palate. Definitely not overcarbonated, but a touch more would have actually been welcomed to help open up the flavors more. Overall it is still drinking quite well at this age. It too may have lost some of its complexities & the bitterness has gone out of it a bit, but it is still a delightfully warming, richly flavored beer. Probably peaked within 1st year. Rating: 7/3/8/4/16=3.8
