It’s not overpoweringly sweet. A small bit of alcohol taste, but not bad. The aftertaste is nice, and makes you want more. billism (42), Missouri City, Texas, USA

The most noticeable (by me) aroma and flavor was apple. Crisp, medium to small body feel. Leaves a bitter-apple after tase. Nice beer over all. It is nice smelling and appears dark tan in the glass with some head, Enjoyable. nick76 (2684), Tampa, Florida, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 15, 2006 The aroma has malt, brown sugar, fruit, and yeast. The appearance is hazy purple brown with a small head. The flavor is like the aroma with butter, toffee, and caramel. The palate is thin but ok for the style. I like this one! | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 12/20 | Oct 14, 2006 500. Pours deep ebony, nearly to the black side of ebony at that. Big, thick, moussy, bubbly tan head. Dark fruits, dark malts, and caramel on the nose. Nice thick rich malt and peat attack and mid-palate, fair amount of caramel in there, too. Unfortunate that there’s a metallic twang on the finish--other than that, it’s a nice clean, semi-sweet finish. Not a bad beer, far from perfect, but eminently drinkable. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 28, 2006 Updated: Sep 29, 2006Bottle. Aroma very sweet (too sweet) and monstrously fruity, malty with a little peat. Cherry, red berry, apple, light alcohol. Pours a deep red with a light brown, creamy/rocky head. Prominent lacing. Firm, solid malt foundation, ends with a little alcohol burn. Upon tasting, the various notes of fruit mingle and form something else entirely. Add a touch of acidity and a splash of sourness, mostly in the near-finish. This isn’t really a great example of style (too alcoholic, too sweet. way too malty, not dry or hoppy enough), and slightly hard to finish. lagermonkey (597), Marietta, Georgia, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 27, 2006 Pours a deep brown with tinges of cherry red. Frothy ivory head. Persistent lacing. Smells quite malty. Toffe and caramel, hints of plum. No hop aroma to speak of, which is odd.
Taste is very rich in toffe and dark fruit flavors. Raisin and spiced black currant. Quite fruity and quite sweet. Hops are impossible to pick out. Very sticky and rich. Not sure this is an ESB (not alot of bitter in this Extra Special Bitter) A decent enough ale though and a pretty good drinker.
