bulletrain76 (536), Santa Cruz, California, USA May 25, 2008 Draught at the brewpub. Dark brown with a small head. Caramelized sugars and light fruity notes in the aroma, which is rather light on the whole. The flavor is rich, with caramel, toffee, brown sugar, chocolate and some berry fruitiness. Medium-full bodied with lively carbonation. Could be a little dryer, but the full, sweet flavors work pretty well. Charlzm (247), Los Angeles, California, USA Feb 19, 2008 Draft at brewery, 02/18/08. ABV 8.8% for this batch. Opaque and very dark brown: prune juice colored. Still has a little foam on surface after a while. Roasted, sweet malty aroma. Flavor is sweet with molasses and maybe chicory notes. Yeasty. Peppery aftertaste. Well-executed. badlizard (1437), San Diego, California, USA Oct 2, 2007 Tasted at brewery. Dark brown with a creamy white head. Woody molasses aroma and taste with an alcoholic dry finish. Old_Mr_Crow (1007), Seattle, Washington, USA Sep 8, 2007 Tap at the brewpub.
Pours very dark with a good-sized head. Roasty, yeasty nose. Overpoweringly sweet flavor, heavy and fairly spicy. Burnt coffee, belgian yeast. Probably the worst dubbel I’ve had. wetherel (994), Carlsbad, California, USA Aug 28, 2007 On tap at the brewpub. Listed as 8.9%, so possibly they changed the recipe. Small nice microbubble head, characteristic of every beer I tried there. Deep, deep amber color. Some banana, malt , vanilla, bourbon, and fruitiness in the aroma. Like Judgement day, but with less banana. Possibly the use of raisins creates the similarity. Toward the sweeter side, but with a dry finish. Nice, although a bit mild. A very good beer.
