Commercial Description:
Black Orchard is an unfiltered, bottle / keg conditioned Belgian-style black wheat beer, or “black wit”, if you will. This dark but surprisingly light bodied beer is very drinkable while still having character and complexity. Chamomile is added for its floral aroma, while the coriander and citrus peel give the characteristics of a traditional witbier. (ABV: 5.7%, IBU: 15, SRM: 26, Release: Year Round, Format: 750 mL bottles and 30L kegs)

Location: 750 ml bottle from Gilly’s, 11/12/09

Aroma: The nose has roasted characteristics, some chocolate and floral notes, and some wheat as well
Appearance: Pours a reddish-brown color with a huge fluffy tan head that dissipates quickly
Flavor: Taste is quite wheat-like, with some spice and smoke notes as well, medium-sweet malty flavor
Palate: It is fairly light (certainly lighter then I was expecting), with an alright, somewhat tingy mouthfeel
Overall Impression: It isn’t particularly exciting. I also noticed that the nose fades rather quickly (I probably would have gone 7 originally, but was hard pressed to go over 5 by the end - so I compromised on 6). The rest of the beer kind of felt the same way. It’s an alright brew, but it does very little to blow me away, and doesn’t really evolve at all as it warms. That pretty much covers this one.

Pours nearly black with mahogany edges. Thick, creamy off-white head. Fruity aroma comprised of apples, apricots, and orange peel blended with holiday spice and spearmint. Intersting, complex taste. Brown bread, orange peel, cinnamon, and heavy with darker fruits (plum, raisins). Slight woodiness with an earthy quality. Balanced well with a licorice sweetness as the beer warms. Initially, this was very easy to drink, but it tended to "build up" making it a bit sticky and too sweet in the finish.

On tap at Blue Dog. Pours black with a live off-white head. Aroma of citrus and yeast. Thin body. Citrus, yeast and chocolate on the palate. Not bad.

750mL bottle. Pours very deep brown, topped with a big tan head. Mild aroma of cocoa, wheat, citrus, and mild spice. Flavor begins with dark wheat, which is soon joined by orange, spice, cocoa, and candi sugar. Body is a too thin. Cocoa and wheat are present for the finish, but disappear quickly. This was a letdown.

Very dark brown with lighter brown edges. Aromas are very nice, sour cherry, lightly roasted wheat and some floral/lavender qualities. Palate is lightweight and rather thin, finishes watery and a bit mineral. Flavors aren’t notable beyond the roasted malts.
