Commercial Description:
Black Orchard is an unfiltered, bottle / keg conditioned Belgian-style black wheat beer, or “black wit”, if you will. This dark but surprisingly light bodied beer is very drinkable while still having character and complexity. Chamomile is added for its floral aroma, while the coriander and citrus peel give the characteristics of a traditional witbier. (ABV: 5.7%, IBU: 15, SRM: 26, Release: Year Round, Format: 750 mL bottles and 30L kegs)

750ml bottle and enjoyed with tj. I was really looking forward to this brew since I sort of dig the "blackened" version of classic styles. Well these bottled conditioned releases seem over carbonated as the beer gushed out the top before I could start the pour... of course there was a big fiizy off-white head associated with the beer, nice sheets of lace upon the glassware. The aroma has notes of raosted malts, dates, pepper, corriander, wheat, earthy and dirty yeast esters, a tad too weak all things considered. The flavor was better, twangy and fruity with a slight smoky and toasty background. Light handed spiced finish with a wheat note throughout. The mouth feel is very sprite and over-carbonated, warming finish which was surprising with only 5.7% ABV. A touch dry and ashy upon the finish as well. Different for sure, tastes better than it smells. I would like to see more orange peel character.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of yespr/Ungstrup. Pours a hazy and opaque dark brown with a lively beige head. Aroma of yest, overripe and dried fruits. 750mL bottle. Poured deep brown with a dense, well-retained cap of beige head. The aroma picked up sweeter chocolates, brown sugar, and toasted nutty notes paired with tart orange peel, floral notes, and wheat.. there was an overriding spicy yeast presence that played well here. The flavor opened with tart floral notes, orange peel, and bone-dry yeast that imparted earth and bananas.. the core was mostly tart wheat, topped by the same sweet chocolates and nutty notes as the nose.. finished spicy and dry with more chocolate. Light-medium bodied and very well carbonated on the palate.. decent feel, but it didn’t quite flow as well as I would have liked.. overall engaging and different, but not quite great.

Pours a dark rusty copper that sits near black. Billowing and profuse moussey tan head that dissipates quickly. Nose is rusty, dark grainy, toasty, burnt popcorn, some earthy coffee. Flavor is crisp, light mouthfeel, starts with coffee roast and burnt popcorn and then follows with some subdued fruity esters. Similar to a light dubbel. Contrary to most Bruery products thisone is vigorously carbonated with a coating mouthfeel.

From a 750mL Bottle. Gusher. Pours a somewhat transparent, medium brown color with a huge head of foamy tan. The first pour brought so much yeast sediment to the top, my beer had enormous yeast chunks floating around, stirred by the carbonation to the point where it looked like a fresh fermentation at high krausen. The next pours were all fairly clear, leading to a more pleasurable textural drinking experience. Aromas of chocolate, coriander, and black pepper spice. Doughy yeast aromas, which blend with the spicy yeast characters to create an intriguing peppermint quality. Slight rubbery note. The herbalness of the coriander also seems a bit awkward when combined with the chocolate malt notes. Medium light bodied, heavily carbonated mouthfeel with a dry, yet full texture. Flavors of chocolate and leathery yeast up front, followed by herbal coriander and a touch of rubbery yeast in the finish. Pleasant amount of chocolate malt character, in that it doesn’t get overly roasty, but it doesn’t seem to fit in well with the yeast profile or the herbal coriander. The spices add an interesting complexity that doesn’t overpower the other dimensions of the brew. The flavors, while enjoyable, aren’t as complex as the White Orchard, but the drinkability is equally high.
