| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Nov 2, 2009 On tap at the Bruery. Pours very viscous, like maple syrup. Aroma is a very rich combination of brown sugar, molasses, vanilla, toffee...Not over the top but pretty close to it. Taste is very sweet, and I love sweet so this is good.
Actually reminds me a lot of Avery Mephistopholes, if it were barrel aged. I think the times I’ve tried Mephistopholes, it was oxidized and little autolyzed, but then I didn’t try it fresh. Mephistopholes seems like a beer you wouldn’t want to try fresh. I don’t notice any major flaws like that in Black Tuesday.
Certainly a dessert beer, that I would in no way want to drink a pint of (800 calories). I’ve got an 18% muscat wine that has been sitting on the shelf for over a year. It is also very sweet and delicious and flavorful, yet I find myself going for a nice red wine or beer instead. I think of Black Tuesday the same way. So I can’t give it close to the 5.0 rating that the hype train is dictating. I gave Avery Mephistopheles a 4.0, and this has less flaws, so I bump it to 4.3, primarily hit by low drinkability. There I said it. Excellent beer! Cheers!

| 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 20/20 | Dec 22, 2009 bottle thanks kegbear! I don’t even know where to begin on this one. The nose is so complex I can barely describe it but there is some vanilla, bourbon and definitely cocoa/chocolate. This beer looks awesome. It’s as dark as inside of a coalminers mule’s ass with a nice dark frothy head. The taste is very chocolatey but not dark chocolate more like milk chocolate/malt balls. It also has some wonderful fruit notes with a bit of raisen. Sweet but not at all cloying. This is for sure a beer to be sipped for a while. Wow is all I’ve got to say about this. mattmc1973 (311), Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 20, 2009 Holy sheet! Got some of this at Kuhnhenn Winter Solstice party, Derek shared it, I think. Black motor oil with tan ring around snifter. Aroma is HUGE bourbon, chocolate, caramel, and molasses. Taste is massively sweet, with very rich and thick mouthfeel. Mild carbonation. Hot and boozy, extremely rich and sweet. Good, but a bit much, couldn’t drink more than a couple ounces of this. hopscotch (5525), Vero Beach, Florida, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Dec 20, 2009 Bottle… This beer rocks!… Tar black with a small, creamy, beige head. The aroma is a decadent mélange of dark chocolate, charcoal, bourbon, coconut and vanilla. To say this is full-bodied would be an understatement. It has the viscosity of Three Floyds Dark Lord - motor oil comes to mind – and soft carbonation. Ultra-sweet, but so very flavorful. Hot and boozy. Bourbon, dark chocolate and vanilla. Sweet, chocolaty, boozy finish. Truly a sipper. Bottle of this world class beer was shared by Degarth in Tampa! tpd975 (243), Riverview, Florida, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 20, 2009 Thanks to Degarth for opening this one at my massive tasting.
A: Very Very dark black pour. Nice tall mocha colored head. Nice retention and some leggy lace.
S: Very bold roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and bourbon. No real oak or vanilla.
T: Malty goodness, but boy is this sweet. We are not talking darkness 08, but this is a sweet beer. There is tons of chocolate malt, with notes of molasses, dark fruit, and toffee. It is boozy with strong notes of bourbon as well. Once again I don’t pick up oak or vanilla. I realize a ton of malt was used here, but it is a bit too sweet for my taste. Would like to see the other components of the barrel as well.
M: Very full in body, rich, sweet, slight boozy burn in the finish.
D: All that being said for 19% it is damn drinkable. Great Great beer, was not epic though.

pours pitch black, deep mocha head with golden lacing.
aroma is insanely boozy, lots of chocolate.
flavor, thick mouthfeel, booze is all over this one and yet, it retains a great drinkability. Booze might bit a little bit overdone, in that case, it might have been overdone. Bourbon barrel, notes of chocolate / caramel malts, too much starch sweeteners. jcwattsrugger (5567), Florida and, New Jersey, USA

Aroma is bourbon, dark malt-chocolate/caramel. Taste is bourbon, sweet dark malt-chocolate/caramel, some roasty. 19% doesn’t come through. gunhaver (1043), Tampa, Florida, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 18, 2009 Bottle, courtesy degarth. Pours black, with huge tan head. Nose is heavy on bourbon, sherry, oxidized notes (the good kind), soy sauce, and lots of roasted malts buried beneath a sweet veneer. Flavor is very sweet, with bourbon, thick chocolate, gooey caramel, and lots more. Very thick, heavy and sweet, but somehow fairly drinkable despite this all. daleharshman (202), San Diego, California, USA
| 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Dec 16, 2009 Entered for my 200th rating! Experienced on November 7, 2009 courtesy of an extremely generous JOETHEYOUNGER who was in town at the start of the first annual San Diego Beer Week. I was well aware of the hype already built up around this beer, but all I can say is that it more than lived up to it. Pours a pitch pitch black with medium mocha head. Nose full of bourbon, salty bacon, vanilla, smoke, and molasses. The taste is simply killer. So many flavors, but I get campfire marshmallows (when you get it perfectly brown and enjoy that first bit into the wonderful goo), vanilla, bourbon, chocolate, smoke, etc. The closest I’ve experienced a beer to simply "melting" in my mouth. Has a velvety creamy finish with more of the bourbon and marshmallow flavors. And where is the alcohol? Sure, there’s a little bit in there, but for 19.5% this is smooth and not really hot at all. My highest rated beer to date is 4.6, but this will clock in at 4.8. Not sure what "perfection" in a beer is exactly, but this comes damn close! Thank you, thank you, Joe!
