Commercial Description:
Brewed in memory of my Grandparents (Fred and Sarah Hottenroth), this tart German-style Berliner Weisse is as authentic as it gets. We used lactobacillus and a hint of brettanomyces to sour this very unusual, low gravity wheat beer. To cut the tartness for those with sweeter tastes, raspberry or woodruff syrup is a traditional way to sweeten the beer. Almost an extinct style, we hope to help revive the Berliner Weisse in memory of two great people (ABV 3.1%, IBU 2, SRM 2, Format 30L kegs).

Draft at Toronado. Very pale hazy yellow pour with a thin white head. Funky aroma with damp earth and hints of nuts. Tart flavor. Very nice,. not overpowering. Lemony with meaty almond and funky yeast notes. Enjoyed it very much.

Draught at TND: Aroma of slight sugar, slight pale malts, a hint of sourness, and a touch of funk. Poured pale yellow in color with a tiny white head that disappeared quickly. Hazy. Flavor is lightly tart. Tastes of grains, slight citrus, light tart fruit, and a hint of funk. Light body. Lightly dry texture. Average carbonation. Lightly tart, slightly funky finish is lightly dry.

Sampled @ Papago. Hazy straw colored pour with a nice fizzy ivory head that leaves quickly and leaves nothing in its wake. Aroma is lemongrass, wheat, and yeastiness. Flavor is soft, light, and mild...acidic citrus, grapefruit rind, and perhaps a bit of brett. Not at all aggressive. Highly drinkable, ample carbonation...great beer on a hot AZ summer day!!!

Tap at Toronado’s 22nd Anniversary. Cloudy yellow color with a small white head. Aroma tart, lemony and bretty. Flavor is wheat, bretty yeast, lemon, and grain. Palate fairly light, dry, and refreshing. Awesome for the style and really good overall. Well done again, Patrick!

Tap at Sacramento Brewing. Very pale, cloudy straw color. Fizzy bu tnot much head. Tart berry nose. Thin in the mouth, kind of watery palate. Weak but interesting taste. A bit of bret yeast and some sourness that fade quickly and cleanly into a buscuit malt flavor. Not my preferred style but I respect the uniqueness.

On tap at Blue Palms, 5oz pour. Pours light, hazy gold with a small white head. Aroma has firm brett qualities, some wheat, and tartness. Body is quite light, “refreshing”, giving the perception of softened, textured water. Flavor has an initial acidic bite, before leveling into more nuanced brett elements. Finishes champagne-like dry. Not much fruit or malt coming through. A bit simple, but quite refreshing.
