Commercial Description:
Brewed in memory of my Grandparents (Fred and Sarah Hottenroth), this tart German-style Berliner Weisse is as authentic as it gets. We used lactobacillus and a hint of brettanomyces to sour this very unusual, low gravity wheat beer. To cut the tartness for those with sweeter tastes, raspberry or woodruff syrup is a traditional way to sweeten the beer. Almost an extinct style, we hope to help revive the Berliner Weisse in memory of two great people (ABV 3.1%, IBU 2, SRM 2, Format 30L kegs).

Bottle. Poured a hazy pale yellow with a thin white head. Aroma was full of tart lemony notes. Flavor was sweet like lemonade with a slightly winey tartness that didn’t match the lemonade flavor that much. It was very light on the tongue.

Bottle. Hazy light yellow pour with some white head. Aroma smells funky with some citrus, fruit and wheat. Sour aroma did not yield very tart flavor, however tartness is apparent, slight raspberry note, overall this is a "light" beer with 3.1 % alcohol that you could drink all day.

750mL bottle from Hi Time Wine. The lightest straw that I have ever seen in a beer, it is hazy with a big three finger white head, good retention. Aroma of lacto, lemon, and light crisp wheat--doesn’t seem too crazy sour so far. Flavor is much the same with the wheat not coming through until the semi-dry finish. I can’t help but think that I’m getting some leathery characteristics as well. There is also a light sweetened grain thing going on that reminds me of Froot Loops, but not glaringly obvious. Sourness peaked around a 4. Moderate prickly carbonation with a light body. Not super crazy complex, but this style isn’t. Very good. Ah, after reading the description they did use some brett, so I’m not crazy noticing the leather. yay.

Hazy light yellow pour with bare, whispey head. Aroma of apples, hay, cheese. Some lemon. Flavor is lightly tart, a bit of funk. I get cheese and some grain as well. Definitely tart. Slick mouthfeel with light finish. Pretty cool beer.

Bottle from Blacklick Wine & Spirits. Pours a cloudy lemonade yellow with a big white head. Funky aroma with some sour lemon and a bit of creamy sweetness. Tart and funky on the tongue, following with some sweet citrus fruits and a sour finish.

Tap at Verdugo. Starts off with a sharp nose that you can tell is purposely acidic and not really based much on the wheat or yeast characteristics. Hazy pale yellow color. Flavor is where the wheels come off, but isn’t it always? Really watery and grainy in the way that happens when the US tries to replicate a German style. The grainy quality doesn’t unify well with the sour - which to its credit stays sharp. I appreciate the ambition and hope the recipe improves.

Bottle at Dilly Deli. Poured hazy light yellow color with an average frothy white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate wheat and sour citrus aroma. Medium body with a thin texture and soft carbonation. Medium sweet & sour flavor with a medium sour & sweet finish of moderate duration. Interesting beer.
