Commercial Description:
Brewed in memory of my Grandparents (Fred and Sarah Hottenroth), this tart German-style Berliner Weisse is as authentic as it gets. We used lactobacillus and a hint of brettanomyces to sour this very unusual, low gravity wheat beer. To cut the tartness for those with sweeter tastes, raspberry or woodruff syrup is a traditional way to sweeten the beer. Almost an extinct style, we hope to help revive the Berliner Weisse in memory of two great people (ABV 3.1%, IBU 2, SRM 2, Format 30L kegs).

750ml bottle served in a tulip. Pale golden color with a light haze and a one-finger thick head of lasting off-white foam. Decent lacing. The aroma had fresh flaked wheat, sourdough bread, and light lemon. The flavor was crisp and sour. Very bready followed by a lemony tartness. Very light and refreshing. Crisp and dry. Simple, but quite tasty and drinkable.

750ml bottle poured straight. No syrup, thank you. Pours a slightly cloudy, very pale golden yellow color with lots of visible carbonation bubbling up and a two finger frothy white head that immediately disappears into very thin ring that slowly fades. No lacing whatsoever. Sweet, slight funky aroma with lots of bready yeast, sweet citrus peel, ripe banana, crisp golden apple and musty earthy bretty funk. Smells like there might even be some champagne yeast as well. Very complex and I’m pleasantly surprised after the lackluster appearance. Soft carbonation up front with a complex sweet, yet tart medium body that is slightly puckering and a dry effervescent finish. Slightly puckering, tart, earthy brett funkiness up front is nicely countered by a very sweet bready yeast backbone with lots of citrus peel, zest spice and subtle ripe banana notes. Lots of lemon peel/zest and crisp golden apple character. The wheat beer characteristics really shine through and blend together very well with the tart/lactic brett notes, making this beer extremely quaffable. The exquisite finish and slightly puckering tart aftertaste makes it hard for me to put my glass down. I have to admit that I’m very surprised with this one. I had this on tap at a Bruery event and was not impressed at all. After sampling this bottle I have to say that Hottenroth is probably the best example of the style I’ve had yet.

750ml. Pours light hazy pale yellow with fizzy white head. Aroma is wheat and light wheat. Flavor is tart with lemon, wheat and some light yeast. Finishes tart. Nice mouthfeel and fizzy carbonation. Nice Berliner Weisse.

Pours a hazy urinish yellow with a small fizzy white head. Lots of carbonation, and a fair amount of sediment. Aroma is of wheat, spice, funk, and dirt. The aroma wasn’t all that appealing. Sort of smelled like the floor of a barn. Taste starts off with a lot of yeast, wheat, and earthiness. Somewhere in the middle is a very tart fruit taste. It then ends with a lot of spice and funk. Lingering spicy and dirty taste. Has a very sweet underlying taste, that blends well with the wheat and tartness. As it warms up, a lot more tartness comes through. Mouthfeel is light and very carbonated. I enjoyed it.

Appearance: Pours out a clear body with just a touch of light, pale yellow hues to it and crowned with a frothy, expansive, white head, though this settles out fairly quickly. Smell: Simply presents a sour, lemony nose with a teeny touch of white wheat. Taste: Faint extra pale maltiness with a little flourish of crisp wheat. Hint of short-lived sweetness prior to the drizzle of tart fresh lemon juice and wave of lactic sourness. Small sip of clean, clear mineral water. Pleasing sourness on the light, lemonesque finish. Mouthfeel: Light-bodied. Medium-high carbonation. Drinkability: Immensely refreshing, made all the moreso with its mere hint of alcohol at 3.8%. It’s good to see somebody over here trying to keep this style alive. This would serve as a fine Summertime beverage, but did just fine as a kick start to a local Christmas gathering.

On tap at The Bruery tasting room. Very crisp lemonesque flavor. A bit tart but not too much. Very easy to drink. Really flavorful. Extremely refreshing. One of the most unique beers I have ever tried. I am blown away that the alcohol on this is so low based on how much flavor it has. This would be a great one to suck down on a hot summer afternoon.

Bottle courtesy of thirdeye11. Clouded clear white pour. Musty smell that turns dry champagne through the nose. Some buttery notes on the taste with flat grain with salt. Peanuty flavor. Strange brew.

Bottle. Pours hazy yellow with a white head. Tart lemony aroma with some lighter wheaty notes. The flavor has lightly tart lemon notes up front and some wheaty notes in the finish. Really good. This would be the perfect summer afternoon beer, but still really good in the middle of a snowstorm.

Bottle from NickD717, thanks! Lemon, dust, apple and salt in the aroma. Lemon and apple in the tart flavor. Hints of melon and dust. Amazing drinkability. Thin, but lots of flavor. Very well made Berliner type weisse.
