| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 1, 2010 It’s hazy, red mahogany with a huge head. Actually the foams floods out of the bottle and goes on and on even after 2 glasses were poured, and the mouthfeel was a bit too carbonated. The aroma has a light sweetness and notes of caramel, light syrup, rye, roasted malt, light pumpernickel, light Christmas spice and the finish is slightly dry. talon1117 (631), Bellvue, Colorado, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 30, 2009 Another gusher. The pour is a very hazy, deep garnet-chestnut color with a massive, beige, foamy, frothy head which is mostly lasting and does leave some tight, frothy lace. The nose is interesting with lots of fruity and rich notes; raisins and some cherry juice, dry Belgian chocolates, raw almonds, spicy rye toast, just a bit of pine, and some brown sugar and clove. The flavor is complete twist with more dry rye notes and less rich malts; lots of cocoa and dry chocolates, rye toast, light brown sugar, and some almonds. The palate is nice for the beer with a moderately full body, dry, nearly lively, and mildly warm; I feel like the spiciness from the rye complements the mild warmth incredibly well. The finish is dry, spicy, and almost a bit roasty with more rye, almost peppery, slight pine and chocolate, and lingering almond notes. A very interesting and unique beer with a very nice palate and aroma and a traditional-type ale feel to it. The flavor is such a complete turnaround from the nose, moreso than I have ever seen. A nice beer from a nice brewery in the winter season. Sparky27 (1641), Phoenix, Arizona, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 30, 2009 Pours a deep brown, slight haze, decent head. Aroma is faintly of caramel and slight spice. Flavor is lightly caramel malts, a touch of apricot, a bit of spiciness, and an enjoyable earthy hop finish that only really comes through after this has thoroughly warmed up. Nicely done. dkachur (2431), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA

Malty sweet aroma with some bread and a touch of vanilla from a murky dark brown pour with a small head. Flavor is very complex with the maltiness coming though up front and then a whole lot of stuff to follow. Vanilla, roasted malt, dark fruits, a touch of rye bread. Very lively in the mouth with a nice warming of the throat. Great cold weather beer. carruthm (1179), Seattle, Washington, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 26, 2009 Really different than anything I’ve ever sampled. Big, brown, and woody, incredibly malty, but spicy in a curious way - maybe due to the rye? Complex enough that I wanted to keep sipping this one.
