Aroma is very strong and malty, not complex but inviting. Pours a beautiful clear amber-brown with a very thick, although not persistent, head. Flavor is smooth and crisp, with a nice balance of hops and malt, not rich but satisfying. Aftertaste has just a touch of hop bitterness in it. My uncle brought this to me all the way from North Carolina. Bless his heart!

Bottled. Poured medium caramelly-brown with a creamy cap of yellow-beige head. The aroma picked up a little bit of sour vinegary fruit infection over a brown sugar and caramelly-sweet core.. the off-notes and lack of anthing really enjoyable didn’t help. The flavor had lightly-toasted caramel and strange grains (grains of paradise?) providing most of the support.. some brown sugar sweetness came through as well along with some lactic notes and dark fruity sourness.. tacky caramel and more of the sourness on the finish. The carbonation was out of hand here, filling up the mouth and making this hard to drink.. medium-bodied and dry at the end. This didn’t do it for me.

Nice deep red hue with a decent head and lacing. Nice caramelized malt flavour on the aroma and taste. Far too much carbonation masked alot of the additional flavour components as I searhed for them. Not a fan of the choice of hops used which seemed to take the balance further apart. This has some potential to be very good, but needs a bit more tweaking in the recipe. Plus, the infection doesn’t do any favours as it’s quite detectable with a bit of sour acetic floating around.

Bottle: Dark caramel color, thick creamy head and large sheets of lacing. The nose is strong with alcohol and caramel malt. Not much in terms of sugars, just light roast and carbonation. The flavor has a fairly dry mouthfeel but a decent body. Easy drinking, but not incredibly quaffable or exciting.

Bottle from Secret Santa. Pour was a nice copper color with a fluffy white head. Aroma was kind of floral with a bit of malt. Flavor was sort of malty/caramel but there was a funky bitterness that I didn’t like. Somewhat of a dry finish. A bit too much carbonation for my liking. Thanks to Secret Santa!

bottle shared by illini08, thanks Jeremy. poured a tarnished copper with a decent sized off-white head and some creamy lace. aroma had an odd perfumey character to it. not a lot going on with the flavor but mild caramel and possibly a nutty hint. II had a hard time getting past the strange perfume rising up from the glass. not DR’s best effort.

Pours a clear reddish-copper body with a large, foamy tan head that sticks around for a good while. The aroma is primarily based on toasted caramel, sugar glazed biscuit, mild floral hops, and some weird, wet grains. The flavor is similar, with those same strange grains getting in the way of everything else. Tastes a bit stale and moderately astringent. Medium bodied. Harsh finish. This is a very strange, unimpressive brew. Not very good.

Pours a translucent deeper golden amber with a large foamy off white head. Aroma of some tropical fruits, on the malty sweet side, some orange peel and a touch of caramel/biscuit malt poking through. Flavor was also fruity...the way this bottle hissed when I opened it and the huge head it poured with I think there may be a little something off settling in. Nothing that really made it a horrible beer. Just has a bunch of fruity...maybe vaguely funky. Tingly carbonation, banana and yeasty/earthy. Maybe a touch of nuts and some caramel malt.
