Perm (140), Tryon, North Carolina, USA Jun 2, 2008 This one is a real treat. The Duck-Rabbit folks consistently brew top-of-the-line products. I can only surmise that living and working in Farmville, NC inspires the brewers to spend long, long hours at their work indoors (where it is presumably air conditioned and has more interesting landscapes..).
Appearance: Russet-copper color. Mahogany, really. And as one would expect, no appreciable head to speak of.
Aroma: A real treasure-trove here: leather, tobacco, hops, cloves, allspice, and even a hint of oregano.
Taste: Banana, clove, caramel, allspice, grapes, brown sugar, and hops. Oy vey pass me another snifter!
Palate: A dry and warming finish.
Overall: Well-rounded for sure. This is one to cellar in bulk! Drinking this makes me long for winter -- seated in front of a roaring fire with my D-R Barleywine in one hand and a nice cavendish pipe in the other. Wearing a wool waistcoat, to be sure.
Serving type: bottle
xmarcnolanx (680), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA Oct 1, 2008 Aroma reminds me of the smell of Stone on brew day. Very grainy, sweet malts, a touch of oxidation and some piny hops. So nice.
Head is very pretty, rock, long-lasting. Light caramel colored body.
Taste is where it falls apart for me. Definitely a lot of graininess in there, some harsh bitterness, no sweet hops in this.
Very English in the sense that I get a touch of cracker in the taste too, but way too much heat comes through.
Overall, so close to being a great barley wine. illidurit (431), Santa Cruz, California, USA Sep 30, 2008 12 oz bottle courtesy of wagenvolks. Poured into a snifter. Russet brown hue that turns brilliant blood orange red when held to light. About a half inch of tan head that recedes a bit quickly.
Aroma is extremely pungent and fruity. Brimming with prune and lush sweet orangey citrus. Malt supports the aroma with toffee notes.
Flavor is sweet up front with candied orange/marmalade. Midpalate is tart and malty, and the finish is roasty with a mild bitterness.
Thick chewy body with light carbonation. A little sticky but the finish is coaxing from the roasted bitter tinge. Alcohol is pretty much undetectable.
Nice beer, not really necessarily spot on for the style, but interesting. golubj (1030), Redwood City, California, USA Sep 30, 2008 Bottle, thanks to ucusty. Light brown, ruby pour with a little head. Aroma is peppery alcohol, some nuts, and fruity malt. Flavor is kinda the same, peppery alcohol and a metallic hoppiness dominating. Same metallic, somewhat nasty aftertaste as the impy stout. Ungstrup (11354), Frederiksberg, Denmark Sep 16, 2008 Bottled. A dark amber beer with a lazing tan head. The aroma is powerful with a weird combination of spices and fruit. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of fruit and light notes of alcohol, with a dry bitter finish. Thanks Papsoe for sharing. Kinz (1916), Glen Allen, Virginia, USA Sep 6, 2008 I had been planning on this for 1900, but hey, I only missed by one. Clear amber, slight head fades quickly. Just what I expect from this style. Aroma is a rich shot of caramel malts and some spicy hops. Flavor is a mtach. Way more complex and satisfying than I am giving it justice for. Perfect palate. Excellent brew with great aging potential. Wish i had another one. Huge thanks to dkachur’s generosity for this one.
