The head is a whisper thin layer of tiny dark tan bubbles and a ring of cream. Aroma is some bitter chocolate, but also alcoholic even cold and more so as it warms. Flavor is bitter and very roasty. The alcohol is present in the flavor as well. I’m not as impressed as I was with the milk stout and the Baltic porter. It’s good but not great, and not worth hunting down. jake65 (1725), Williston, North Dakota, USA

Poured fudgey brown and developed an opaque black mass with a lasting cocoa powder brown head. Strong aromas of licorice, anise, alcohol vapors, chocolate cherries, bakers chocolate. The flavor reminds me of that really bitter chocolate folks are eating these days. Very robust. Yet the palate is medium bodied and quite easy to drink. Long lingering aftertaste. Thanks a million Jason. A real treat. ucusty (1912), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | May 8, 2007 Bottle courtesy of Moejuck: Poured a deep black color stout with a small dirty brown color head with average retention and some lacing. Aroma of coffee is quite dominating with some weird dry hops. Taste is a mix between some dry coffee, some bitter roasted malt and a dry ending with some hops. Body is quite full with some low carbonation and no alcohol was discernable. I thought the taste was just way too dry to be enjoyable and would have appreciated some sweetness to balance this thing out. Quite glad I got the chance to try this but can’t say I truly enjoyed the experience. DirtyMartini (194), Los Angeles, Alabama, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | May 8, 2007 unfortunately not on the par with their baltic porter. pours pitch black with very little head at all. what little is there disappears quickly. aroma is of roasted malt, chocolate, and alcohol heat. taste was rather roasty and smokey, with some chocolate but surprisingly very little alcohol burn. my hopes are they continue to tweak this year to year because based on their baltic porter, they are capable of much more and could easily have one of the best RIS eventually. they are still pretty new so they have time to grow and improve.
