There’s quite a bit of anise in the aromas, which is cool and I hope it comes out nicely in the flavor. There’s also a bit of cocoa and other roasty smells there. Flavor is nice... more dark fruit than I would have guessed from the nose and quite a bit of vanilla sweetness, too. I was hoping this would be a little more abrasive with licorice and peaty flavors... but it’s good this way, too. nimbleprop (895), SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 18, 2009 12oz bottle from Chevy Chase Wine. Pours a viscous, opaque, oily black with a lacing, creamy beige head. Strong licorice aroma, nutty, roasted malts, toast, coffee. Flavor is very nice. Brown sugar, caramel, chocolate, licorice, nuts, toast, booze, red grapes, dark fruits, plums, raisins, vanilla. Thick on the tongue, really transforms on the palate and hits every taste bud. Complex while still to the point. cking (1023), North Canton, Ohio, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 17, 2009 Thick, dark brown body with a thin yet lasting light brown head and some heavy set lacing. Roasted nutty aroma with a dry toast quality. Easily detectable chocolate and coffee notes rounded out a very good aroma. Flavor in line with the aroma but more chocolaty and a bit less nutty. Some sweet dark fruit notes to boot. Very enjoyable. FROTHINGSLOSH (2010), GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 15, 2009 Sampled on draft at Smokin Joes in Pittsburgh PA this beer poured a black color with a small brown head. The aroma was dryish, roasty, malty and had a chocolate syrup element. The flavor was dryish toasty malts and Baker’s chocolate. The finish was long, bitter, roasty and dry with light chocolate on the finish. The mouthfeel was fairly thick. Nice. Jsawyer (286), Glenside, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 15, 2009 Bottle. Pours syrupy thick obsidian body with a large mocha head that eventually subsided into a thin ring producing a lot of lacing. Aroma was coffee, lactose, roast barley, very slight licorice, milk chocolate, and slight woodiness. Flavor was immediately dominated by coffee and dark chocolate bitterness that quickly mellowed to raisin, herbal, citric vanilla, and comforting woodiness. Palate actually seemed thin for the style but it was pleasantly warming. Great beer for $4. jehoey (766), Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, USA
| 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 3/5 | 8/20 | Jun 13, 2009 Aroma was at first strong mocha, but as it warmed turned to soy sauce and later on to ringwood funk. it hides the alcohol well though. Poured jet black with very small tan head. flavor was at first chocolate but later this turned into lots of soy sauce with an astringent and slight edge to it. Not enjoyable to finish. mouth feel was alright, full bodied with some drinkability from the low carbonation. Didn’t have the flavor notes I like in an Impy stout. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 11, 2009 Thanks Emacgee. Black pour with a brown head. Roasted malt aroma, chocolate, bitterness. Bitter tasting, roasted malt, sweetness, slight alcohol. Leaves a bitter dry aftertaste. Laces the glass. The beer starts out tasty and improves as it warms up. Cheers to the makers of such a fine tasty beer. Please sell it in Illinois!!!!! vtafro (475), , New Jersey, USA

Dark pour with a dark tan head, if i didn’t know better it looks exactly like Guinness after the pour(in a Guinness pint). Aroma is nice, flavor opens up with warming to correct serving temperature but not without the etoh burn. After taste isn’t overpowering. overall great beer.
