heemer77 (3536), North Liberty, Iowa, USA May 15, 2008 Thanks for the bottle, barleypops. The body was black with an orangeish head. The aroma was fairly sweet with milk chocolate and pancakes. There was also some walnuts. The taste was pancakes and dark chocolate. There was also some depe dark fruit like prunes. While the alcohol was definitely there, it was not very hot. The finish was dry with some nice coffee. A well made and fairly balanced Impy.
Rciesla (708), Brick City, New Jersey, USA Jul 8, 2008 Bottle. My personal favorite from DR. Black body with a good touch of etoh. Chocolate, caramel roasted bitterness, soy and sweet malt. Real good.
zappafan99 (193), Rock Hill, South Carolina, USA Jul 5, 2008 7/8 tasting. Look: Black body, with small tan head. Aroma:Roast, toast, malt, sweetness, chocolate, grape and a little alcohol. Taste: Espresso with chocolate, dark fruit, sour grape. Unique. The taste is a big ,wild one. mar (480), Dallas, Texas, USA Jul 1, 2008 bottle thanks to turdferguson. black pour with no head. deep chocolate and roasted malts on the nose. great thickness and a nice chocolate flavor with a smooth chocolate finish. quite impressive brew here. edmedina (6), Chesterfield, Virginia, USA does not count Jun 28, 2008 Pours a thick black, no head really to show for this pour. Aroma is more of a coffee almost a chocolate or molasses smell there. Surprisingly the taste isn’t at all over powering. You don’t really get anything at first but then malt sneaks up on you to let you know they are around. Taste is really a malty coffee taste. It is mild though unlike most Imperial Russian Stouts this one is rather tame. I get very little after taste with this beer. It definitely ranks up there as one my favorites durhambeer (298), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jun 26, 2008 Bottle. Nearly black oily pour with minimal brown head. Gotta coax that sucker. Roasty coffee and barley as well as chocolate as well as butterscotch and a bit of vanilla bean on the nose. Similar palate, but with added hops a bit sweeter and milkier than expected given the bitter roast nose. A little thin on the palate. Still, a very good beer from a wonderful brewery.
