Commercial Description:
Our version of a traditional French Biere de Garde is brewed with six different French, German, and Belgian malts giving it a deliciously complex sweetness balanced by noble hops. We used a lager yeast but fermented it at ale yeast temperatures, giving it a delicious smoothness. We named it after our friend Eliane De Clerck, owner and brewster (female brewer) of De Clerck Brewery in Peronne, France. 23IBU

22oz Bottle. A snappy fresh sourdough bread, apple butter, and Munich malt aroma. Very chewy and yeasty, heavy on the apple. Pours a coppery orange, mostly clear, with a soapy white head. Flavor is dominated by munich malts, to the point that this tastes like an octoberfest with some Trappist yeast character. Some warm alcohols evaporate into the sinuses with calvados twinge. Beautifully dry and flighty. Rich mineral profile. This is generally a nice, fresh bright beer, although it does seem a bit confused at times. Eventually, the Munich malt comes up against a nicely fresh Pilsener malt character, for good base flavor. If it was 50 cents cheaper, it would easily become one of my favorite bombers under $5. Maybe toned down on the Munich malt and up on the "cellar" qualities, this would be a world-class Biere de Garde. But, as it is, it’s still a damn good beer.

Deep amber pour. The nose is quite sweet and fruity with a bit of sweet honey and a touch of earthy character. There is a bit of light orange peel in here, but it doesn’t really come together for me.

Bomber. Pours a very slightly hazy, dark, brazen amber hue. A moderate head of spongy, ivory colored foam settles slowly to a thin film, leaving jagged, skinny flares and tiny spots of lacing on the glass. The aroma shows notes of sweet, yeasty bread and fresh, honey glazed wheat grain, with traces of apple and a bit of dusty, floral hoppiness. Flavors are again very bready, with a soft honeycomb sweetness and notes of caramel and dough. The hops turn a little more grassy and earthy, lending a nice balance to the fresh malt. Substantial in body, the palate is initially sweet, but the yeast lends a dryness to the finish that compliments the soft carbonation well. Overall, it’s a very solid Bière de Garde that I’d be happy to drink anytime.

BOMBER. Pours a golden glazed body with a white head. Funky cheese notes, honey and bread with a leather like burlap sack dryness and faint dust. Some green and herbal hop tones. Spiced with a note of tea and bread. I like.

Bomber thanks to microgrog for sharing! Pours a honey deep golden with a nice thin tight white head. Aroma is tons of fresh bready malts, pilsner, toast, honey, baked french bread- and some light herbal hops- Nice. Flavor is also very toasty, bready, full decoction-like malt, smooth, modestly sweet without being syrupy, and great fresh herbal and lightly floral hops- and a good clean finish. I had to go back and try to finish the bottle the next day, and it still tasted great.

Pours deep amber into a tulip. White head quickly recedes to hug rim. Caramel aromas. Thick with upfront caramel turning bready and peppery in the lasting finish.
