Commercial Description:
Bottle; Pasteurised.
Its initial sweetness is, apparently, "of roasted and vinous notes with a subtle bitter aftertaste". Strong fruitiness, often with "banana notes" standing out, is derived from Old Peculier’s fermentation process.

12 oz. bottle. Clear garnet hue, tan head leaves a nice lace. Awesome black currant, vinous smell. Medium bodied with a smooth mouthfeel. Earthy, black currant, dark tree fruit malt taste. Finishes with a fermented fruit, alcohol flavor on the breath. One of my all time favorite brews from the Big Island. July 2003

12 oz bottle, poured into pint glass. Pours a lovely dark garnet with minimal head, slightly sourish nose with deep toffee notes and lots of berry fruitiness, pretty solid body, very smooth and luscious, sweet wooden character with dark berries, herbal hop character and somewhat bracing bitterness. A damn good old ale.

Pours a dark redish brown with good head that quickly disappears. Malty, roasty aroma. Flavor is of coffee, bitter with a bittersweet finish. Good commercial ale. You can pick it up at most supermarkets.

Pours light red brown with a short off-white quick disipating head. Nose of toasty malts, dried fruits and a little bit of port. Minerally and fairly light. A bit of sweet tropical fruit, I didn’t get the banana but maybe some pineapple. Grapes. It’s nothing like I expected. It is pretty good. Finish is very dry for the style with a bit of peppermint and herb in the finish. Odd. Found this in Kyoto.

Bottle. Poured into a pint. Very flowery aroma. Poured very dark brown with frothy tan head. Good balance of malts and is a very smooth Old Ale.

Very good. Pours black with a tan head. The aroma is of alcohol, yeast, maltiness, with a bit of wine-ness and nut. The flavor is surprisingly smooth for a beer this dark. It pours past your lips easily and has a perfectly balanced aftertaste. Just enough kick for a drinking beer. I’m definitely going to buy a six pack of this.

Pours a cloudy dark brown with small light tan head. Alot of caramel malt, dark fruits, and molasses in the nose. Pretty sweet smelling. The flavor was much the same, medium bodied, with a profound malt presence. Also, had a roasty bitterness to it especially in the finish and the aftertaste. Not as sweet in the flavor as in the nose. Definitely get some mild caramel and molasses flavors in there too, but not as much as I thought there would be. Pretty good.

9/26/07 From the bottle. Aroma is alcoholic dark fruit forward, leathery, with a coffee-roast like malt character, with notes of molasses and a unique tart earthiness. Appearance is mahogany, clear, with a moderate off-white head. Flavor is roast malt forward, with some toast, light caramel, molasses, light nuttiness, moderate bittering and a low earthy hop note. Mouthfeel is toasty, grainy, medium/full bodied, with no warmth. Overall, an interesting, complex brew with a good balance between hops, sweetness and roast.
