May 30, 2007 A fine brew. Deep and rich, pouring dark with a lightly creamy head, the aroma of roasted nuts mingling with caramel teases your nose. A sip provides the promised flavor of smoky, open-fire roasted notes on the front of your tongue, with banana following a caramelly hops finishing up. Enough alcohol to even out the mild sweetness--over all, a nice brew indeed.

May 27, 2007 (Bottled, BBE 04/2007) Clear, deep, dark ruby brown with a smallish but firm and lacy, beige head. Roasted-malty aroma with some dark fruit and a hint of licorice/salmiac. Malty, bananaish sweetness in the flavor, with anise/licorice hints and a dryish, bitter and sour, slightly ashy-burned finish. Medium-bodied, slightly thin palate with a bit fizzy but pretty low carbonation. A stylish and very drinkable beer, but could have more body to fit the Old Ale boots.

May 19, 2007 Bottle. Pours a deep reddish brown color with a small off white head. The aroma is sweet malts with a bit of fruit, bananas I think. I also get some alcohol. The flavor is an interesting mix of swee fruits, roasted malts, with enough hop bitterness to balance everything out a bit. Not an everyday beer for me but not bad.

May 15, 2007 i like it, always have. first had it in 1993. nice fruity taste, on top of a good hop character and nice malt base. peculiar indeed! tastes dark a bit smokey and thin but silky. a lot going on here. good to just sit and drink while you ponder something worthwhile. slightly astringent and yet foamy.

May 13, 2007 From bottle-- probably a year old. I’m not familiar with many commercial styles of English old ales. It reminds me a little of an ESB or a brown ale with a slight musty bitter aftertaste. The initial aroma and taste is very clean-- you detect the bitterness and must on the aftertaste. I thought it was interesting, but not spectacular. Would like to try a fresher sampe on tap.

May 9, 2007 Updated: Jun 11, 2008Very dark red/brown pour with small tan head. Slight whisky aroma. Flavor is very complex highlighted by roasted malt ... but is a little thin... vague. Very good beer though.
