Caramelly aroma reminds me of a red irish ale, with some alcohol in there. Sweetness in the aroma betrays the flavor, which is slightly sour, especially in the aftertaste. Some alcohol and (sour?) bread in the flavor as well. Rich, buttery mouthfeel, similar to a doppelbock. Overall, I liked this beer, but not as a regular session beer. jgentgesdo (564), Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA

Pours inky brown with medium tan head that vanishes quickly. Nose is powerful caramel and cream, with an alcohol note. There are dates, belgian sugar candy, toffee, roasted almonds in the flavor. Rather chewy mouthfeel. I have to rate this high because this beer opened my eyes to some of the "alternative" stuff. fonefan (11525), VestJylland, Denmark

| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Sep 12, 2006 Dark ruby with a small white head. Thick malt caramel abounds with a sticky and syrupy mouthfeel. Some raisins and a little smoke towards the end with a mild bitterness. Satisfying session beer but I didn’t find it nearly as good as many other reviewers. Maybe I’m the Old Peculiar. BigBen2120 (688), Derry, New Hampshire, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Sep 8, 2006 Black but slightly translucent body with very thin offwhite head. Smells malty, kind of earthy maybe? Similar to a Scottish ale in aroma. The first thing I noticed about this beer when tasting it was the mouthfeel. It is a fairly thick feeling beer. Very impressive in that department. Tastes sweet and malty. Almost no hop to speak of. Also has hints of a black licorice or rootbeer flavor to it (the aroma had this too). Kind of roasty too, but not enough to make it more similar to a porter. Reminds me in many ways of a Scottish or Scotch/wee heavy ale. Very tasty. Complex flavors, but well-balanced. Does not hit you over the head with any particular flavor or the entire flavor in general. Not something I’d drink everyday, but I’m pretty impressed. Blackbarrel (116), new york, New York, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 25, 2006 Smells like a typical english ale, but the taste is something else. Bitter, bossy, and hoppy up front, tastes a bit Scottish. However, the finish gives way to a slightly creamy sweetness that is very delectable. It’s also slightly fruity. Very nice, an on-a-whim buy that turned out to be great!
